Thread: flat spots on tires

Probably a really dumb question but, I was driving home this morning down the highway and the car in front of the car in front of me decided to slam on the brakes and go from 80 to 20 because they saw a cop car in the median of the highway (which the cop was sleeping anyway), so that in turn caused everyone to slam on the brakes, I was driving my 1.6L (which the brakes are horrible on) and my fronts locked up and almost hit the car in front of me, the car behind me (new dodge challenger) had to swerve and hit the construction barrels on the side of the highway to keep from plowing into me

Basically I flat spotted the tires, I need new tires but I was hoping to get another 5000-10000 miles out of them, its only noticeable at low speeds (I drive all highway 55 miles each way to work),
would it wear the shocks out faster if I drive it like that for a while? I have rm/agx combo and want them to last a long time, I'm pretty much at the wear indicators and the flat spots are down to the bottom of the tread.

You want to get 5-10k more out of tires that basically have no tread left?...and flat spotted to boot? Dood, seriously.

Yah I've never flat-spotted my tires unless they were as you describe (at the end of their life). I would get new tires.

However, I can't say you'd do much appreciable damage to your struts if you rode on them for another 10k miles especially if you can't feel it except at low speeds.

However if you do have another braking situation like above you're basically screwed with those flat spots.

The tires lasted me a little over a year so far and have 70,000 miles on them, I just don't have $300 for 2 tires right now, damn low profile tires, I m going to have my ser on the road soon, all I have left on that is the nx front brake conversion, power steering hose, new rear calipers and fix the exhaust.Then the 1.6L will sit for a bit and get rear disc conversion, timing chain fixed, new tires, exhaust, a sr20ve or just turbo the ga16

Those gaу sixteens are just made to be twin turbo. Have you seen the exhaust ports on the head? =]

Don't drive with flat spotted tires. Too many risks with personal safety.

Go buy some used tires at a minimum, or pull the wheels from the SE-R and throw them on the 1.6...

A good burn out will fix the flat spot if its not too bad. If they are at the end of their life do not try it. This only works on tires that are not worn out.

Used tires are like $60 installed for a pair around the corner from me.

where in south florida are you? there are a few places that sell cheap tires, cheap but new....

If I go the turbo route it will get headwork, $60 where? For 205 45 r17's, I live in west palm and go to school in ft. Lauderdale
