Thread: Clunking from the rear

I'm getting this odd clunking sound from my driver's rear area - it's not once or twice, it's a clunk clunk clunk sound. It used to happen when I was turning left but now it happens in a straight line, when I'm turning, then for some reason or another stopps for a while. It does not clunk with the tire off the ground (perhaps because I can't get it spinning fast enough I'm not sure. Suggestions?

btw I lost my job the other day so that's why I haven't been around. in case anyone's wondering

Sorry to hear man, good luck finding a new job, I know it can be hard. And the clunking, have you changed anything on the car lately? Springs, shocks...?

neither - I did a whole bunch of front end stuff - replaced the engine and whatnot - the rear I have never worked on in the 2 years I've owned it - which is what's so weird

aftermarket exhaust?

if not could be worn exhaust hangers.

the stupid muffler heat sheild was hanging kinda low - everything else checks out - will remove heat sheild and see if that fixes the problem.

I hope that I'm not stating the obvious, but check the connection points for the rear sway bar. Shake the bar and make sure everything is tight. If could be a split bushing or loose connection.

My stock exhaust on stock hangers would bang against the parallel links in the rear around left hand corners (maybe after I lowered the car?). I moved the exhaust all the way to the driver's side of the car (by hand) and put a small hose clamp on the hanger by the front of the gas tank to hold it more towards the middle of the car. Never had a problem since.
