Thread: RM/AGX..Popping noise in turns?

Hey,

I'm having some issues w/my AGX/RM combo. When the car sits cold for a while and when I back out of a parking space I get a loud popping noise. It's been pretty much determined that it is the spring grinding in the assembly either on the bottom or top. Can someone explain why this might be happening?

One interesting thing I noticed after installing the RM/AGX combo was that the RM spring seemed pretty loose with the front wheels jacked up. I can move the spring around a bit when there's no load on the springs. Is this normal? The strut seems pretty well tightened.

I can turn the wheel about a 3/4 turn and then it pops. It always seems to happen at the same spot within the turn of the steering wheel when backing out. I've also had it happen when going into a hard decline/incline and turn. All other suspension parts have been checked and seem fine.

Any ideas?

Perhaps using rubber hose on the ends of the spring would help this?

I have a similar problem with my CSK's/Ground Controls, it is seeming to get worse. It is a loud thud, like the shock or spring is moving about 1/8th of an inch with significant force.

Ya, that's how it feels to me. Definitely a metal on metal sound. I have the stock/old rubber mat under there, but ya I've seen threads mostly for the Hypercos about putting the rubber tubing under there. I wonder if that'd help...I wonder more what's causing it

On mine the nut that goes onto the strut didnt thread all the way down so when i make a sharp turn or bump it will make a popping noise like its going up and down. I have yet to correct it but will this winter.

Pretty much the same thing with my rm/agx setup but I've narrowed it down to just the front pass side I think I'm going to try the rubber hose idea

That doesn't ring any bells. I could have sworn when I put mine together (B13) that the spring was decently snug. I do not remember too well though. =(
Edit: I seem to be jacking my car up a lot these days. If I do it again I'll check my front springs for you.

Can you have someone else turn the wheel while you are under there looking at things? Maybe put the car up on ramps?

This is what i did on my set up agx/hyperII's its almost the same as the agx/rm



notice the rubber hose(12.7mm heater hose/ advanced auto) on the bottom of the coil. No noise what so ever. I did it on all four struts, works great.

I think it is very likely that it has to do with the strut shaft and the nut at the top. I am only getting it on the drivers side and i had to space out the nut with a bunch of washers, maybe its not enough. Felt snug when I put it together.

Hmmm, anyone on the board w/the RM/AGX combo have a slightly loose spring after bolting up to the AGX strut? I remember we didn't even need the spring compressor to get the nut on for the fronts.

Could be the way the spring is seated in the perches. Could also be bad thrust washers. If you have the plastic kind and they break it can make a springy noise when you turn the wheel. Ask me how I know
