Use one of these: You can rent something similar from AutoZone/Advance/etc. I have replaced the ball joints in my OEM control arms with MOOG on multiple SR powered cars using this tool with zero issues.

Yeah , I got a kit similar to that ^^^ from Harbor Freight. They are on sale every few months.

Is it worth it to buy a kit instead of renting one?

I guess so because now my ball joints have been afraid to go bad again. They know the tools are always sitting there waiting to replace them.

If you go through a lot of different cars I would buy a kit. Otherwise just rent one. You shouldn't have to replace ball joints very often unless you have other suspension issues (worn dampers, etc)
