B14: Parts to replace during Strut/Spring Upgrade?
Hey,

So, I know there are some parts people recommend replacing during a strut/spring upgrade like the dust boots. Can someone give me a list of parts for the B14 that they recommend replacing during the upgrade?

Thanks!

I just replaced my struts on my car, in addition to struts, I got new upper/lower spring pads, thrust bearings, upper strut mounts, bump stops, strut boots...but my car has very high mileage, so that's why I did all that stuff.

110% Covered In Full.

How about a complete listing of every single B14 part number itself? Plus a few very, very suspension smart guys with slightly differing viewpoints discussing exactly what to replace and why? In full detail.

Would that help?

I have read the Suspension thread and even that very section in the past.

This still does not answer my question and why I posted my thread. I did not ask simply for a part list, but for recommendations.

I do not need a list of parts and their numbers. I need recommendations of which of the parts on the part list to replace. Like I said in my original post, which parts do most people replace? Do most people replace ALL parts?

What have YOU replaced when doing YOUR strut/spring upgrade and why?

Thanks!

Things to look for are the bearing, the mount play, the gaskets, isolators, bump stops, dustboots. I think that should cover it.

The rule of thumb that i go by is if i am taking it off and it is a wear item you might as well replace it now.

A few questions for you though, you do not list any info on what you are doing. Are you just replacing the stock struts with bolt ins? Are you using the stock springs? Any suspension mods? Plans for the future?

I replaced everything when i did mine but i also upgraded everything including bushings because i did not want to go back and have any issues later down the road.

I would replace everything. Save yourself the hassle later on down the road.

Correct. I'm with you.

Hmmmm....

Camerok did that list of parts quite effectively.

Steve threw in his two expert cents on his recommendations of what to replace.

"List of parts"....."recommendations".....

This is a standard question, I see it all the time. Here is the conversation between camarok and two very smart guys.

Basically I want to be able to take off my Old OEM suspension and put my new setup on ( RM and AGX ) w/o swapping ANY old parts. I should have descriptions and part numbers for anyone else who wants to do something like this.

I know there's alot of wierd spacers and the front setup has like a 2 pieces strut mount or something weird, so in the next day or so I'll post up things and we should be good to go!

BTW This will be for a B14 specific, don't know what swaps to a b13, I know for sure the rears will probably be different.

I throw the tophats away all the time when I get housing for Koni jobs and I can't remember the last time I saw a set of oem top hats I would not reuse with just some new bearings.

However, camerok is a very thorough gentleman and wanted to replace it all. Every last bit of his suspension hardware, struts, springs, boots, bumpstops, the whole shebang. If you want to do the same for your B14, here's the thread with pictures:

Exploded view suspension... in person - SR20 Forum

And camerok, being incredibly helpful in his detail minded posts also gives you all the B14 part numbers and pricing:

B13, B14, B15 Suspension Information..... - Page 9 - SR20 Forum

There ya' go. You're now good to start planning your suspension. You can take Steve's advice or do what camerok did and replace it all. Your call, both ways have logical arguments behind them.

Well....Camerok replaced them all, not a bad idea with our old-ass suspensions.

Steve only replaces the thrust bearings.

I replaced:

1) Dust boots (OEM, two front pairs purchased from Greg V)

2) Bumpstops (Koni)

3) Struts (AGX)

4) Springs (Hyperco)

5) Misc. additional suspension components installed/replaced. None of which was a normal "OEM wear item" as per your inquiry. Ie. Superpro caster bushings, RSTB, FSTB, Progress RSB, etc, etc.....more modifications.

And that would be it. I did not even do the thrust bearings, they were inspected thoroughly and deemed in proper working condition.

Camerok - Replace them all, everything.

Steve - Thrust bearings only.

Shawn B - Replaced what was necessary per individual, case by case, close inspection of the parts. (Not that I am any expert, my trusted mechanic Mike and I did the "inspecting" together. Me deffering to his knowledge on the individual parts.)

Uh....does that better answer your question?
