They can tell when they pull the piston rod from the housing. If it is dented/etc they know the strut has been bottoming out. That occurs either when the suspension travel is too short (lowering springs) or the spring rate is not strong enough (in general).
For example, the setup that Benito has should never bottom out at reasonable heights. As in the springs should be fully compressed before the Koni reaches the limits of it's downward travel - that also
assumes the springs can fully compress since the rates are very stiff (for a FWD Nissan). *I know this since I measured the setup - same measurements I believe I linked to you that time.*
Just install them like the threads state, use reasonable ride heights, and spring rates; and replace them when you wear them out in a 100,000 miles (or whatever that is in KM
) I believe Steve Foltz's old car finally had to have them replaced at about 80-100k miles (and that was with decent rates and track days).
