The B-Pillar braces are limited in how far into the door opening they can project.

http://www.fia.com/resources/documents/994546964__appj_art_253.pdf
8.3.2.5 diagram 253-49 dimension "B" is a max of 250mm, which is 9.84in.

In my case, as the main hoop is about 6" back of where most guys would put it (on top of the rear seat shelf instead of dorectly in front of it), the projecting into the door is slightly less than 5", or about 1/2" of the allowed amount. If the main hoop were that 6" forward, then the b-pillar braces would have to be shorter. As they are, they make a great place to mount a length of FIA roll cage padding to help constrain the passengers' heads in the case of a sideways crash.

If anyone is wondering why the horizontal bar in the main hoop isn't gusseted like the X is, it's because the harness bars are considered to be two separate entities, not one bar bisecting another (and they're there to hold the harness, not to reinforce the main hoop).

Cage is 100% welded and done!

Car was inspected this morning by the Competition Director of Rally-America and the logbook will be in the mail tomorrow. It's officially a real rally car now!

Nice! Congrats, as it's a big step to get a car rally legal.

Too tired at the end of the night to take new pics, but the cage has been painted, new clutch installed, and the engine is back in the engine bay (but not on the mounts yet, just in close to the right place). Goal is to get the engine in, axles installed and struts fully buttoned up in the front tonight.

Just realized that I have next Monday off of work, thankfully.

Cage painted (not great, but looks good from 10+ feet and should prevent rust until I can give it a better coat over the winter), and engine in place.

Very nice. What did you coat the fuel tank with in the picture?

Just spray paint. Mostly to make it easier to clean. The tank was raw galvanized when I got it, and kinda rough.

Just read about what happened on Special Stage, it's a shame. If it makes you feel any better, I've had worse happen. Imagine showing up to an event 500+ miles away hoping your car is going to be ready, working on it at 5.am. after 2 hours of sleep after a 10 hour drive, and barely managing to pass scrutineering. Then, not 1/4 mile down the transit stage to the first SS, the fuel cuts out permanently and you are stranded on the side of the road. I've had that happen, and trust me, I feel your pain. It could be worse though!
