That picture tells nothing in my opinion.

What you need to do is take out the spark plugs and rotate the motor via the crank untill you can get the 2 dark links from the chain over your cam sproket timing dots.

This means the two dark links will be over the 2 cam sproket timing dots. The exhasut cam will be at 12oclock via the cam sproket key and when you look down at the crank pully the timing marker will be over the 0 mark.

This is what needs to be done to show if the motor is truely on timing.

But as long as he marked which links they came off of then he shouldnt need to turn the motor til the links line up.

Yep keep thinking like that. This is how people get into trouble.

The way I explained will inform you as to the complete motor being lined up. Absolutly fool proof.

You seem to not realize that alot of people can drop the chain to the point where on the DE motors the chain can slip one tooth on the crank.

Now you are of 20* of on the bottom but yet everything lines up on the top.

There are 36 theeth on each cam sproket which represents 10* each.

There are 18 theeth on the crank sproket that represent 20* each.

Thanks Dre, the chain did come off of the crank sprocket...I thought I had it back on correct, but now you've said even 1 tooth off is 20*...It must be wrong on that one.

I'll do what you said this weekend...and post it here.

Cheers

When I rebuilt my motor, I dropped the chain back in multiple times. The first time I took the cover off to see if it was misaligned. It was never the case, I did it a few more times to see if it would actually come off and nope.

I just figured there might be a lockin mechanism to keep the chain on the crank sprocket once the timing cover is on. Thats why I always just mark the links and line them back up ever since.

Had a dial gauge on it today for true TDC. I know the black links aren't over the timing dots...but this proves it's spot on doesn't it?

so is the #1 piston at the top of the compression stroke, or top of the exhaust stroke?

Nah, Highport heads are quite rare over here...I've since changed to C2's and a different form of Tuning and gained 20whp. Think a Charles header and a 3" system would give me some better results again, but this car has took the sideline for the mo, will sort it out over spring.

N14 Sunny, P10 Primera and B13 NX all got highport engine. Dont tell me they arent common in England.
