Thread: Help!! Crank will not turn completely.

It turns about 3/4 then it feels like its hitting a wall. I have the cams and the timing chain tensioner out. I think the timing chain is stuck, when i turn the crank counterclock wise the pulley bolt starts to come loose. Can i remove the timing chain cover with the motor still in the car?

Yes, you can, but it is a real bear. IF you have exhausted all other options, best thing to do is support the upper oil pan from below, then detach the passenger side mount and dogbone mount to allow you to tilt the engine upward toward the passenger side. That will help give you best access. Other than that, you are into pulling or dropping the engine (not fun, but not hard, just time consuming.

Here is what you did wrong.

Never, ever turn the motor with the tensioner out. The Chain is not stuck. You have jumped teeth on the gears. The valves are touching the pistons.


You will have to take off the upper and lower oil pans, Then remove the passenger engine mount, the engine mount bracket, Water pump pully. Then you will have to take off the oil pump cover. You will see that you have jumped teeth on the crank gear.

This is not a fun job at all.

Thanx for the feedback's. One more question, Shouldn't the crank and pistons turn freely with the cams out? If so the only thing I can think of is the chain might be bunch up on crank gear. Is this possible? Yeah I wanted to dot my eye when I turn the engine with the tensioner out.

Or could a vavle be stuck open with the cams out. Damn I need to take pics

You are right.

Then the chain is stuck. Still a bad move to turn the motor in that position. The bottom end will have to come apart.

I mean, you might be able to pull the valve cover and get at the chain and pull it up to remove the bind. I don't think the bottom end has to come apart just yet. Does it?

well im gonna take it to a shop have them pull the motor out and remove the timing chain cover to see if its stuck. Damn now is a good time to have some extra cash for pulleys but im broke barely have enough to get the work done.

The chain will be stuck inbetween the cog and either the block or the cowling...depends what side it is. Take the lower oil pan off look up and you'll be able to see what I mean.
