Thread: U13 SR20DE: Needs advice on exhaust

Hello from Philippines! I have this U13 Altima with SR20DE (high port). I am planning to upgrade the exhaust system to gain more power. It has freeflow muffler; I recently installed K&N filter, and will have tri-y headers installed next week. Should I also upgrade my exhaust pipe to 2.5? What's the stock pipe size of the SR20DE anyway? Thank you guys!

DE exhaust is tiny...might even be less than 2 inch
I would and usually go 2.5 inch on a DE if making a performance system.
With proper muffler and resonator(s) it can be made to be pretty quiet as well.
Take a look at Vibrant ultra quiet resonators and the stealth black Vibrant mufflers.I have used them alot and they have a nice mellow tone but still flow and sound pretty quiet compared to others out there

If i remember its a weird size like 1.75 (or even smaller) or something close to there but its not 2.0". I had a muffler shop replace the oem that had holes with 2.0" since they didn't have that odd ball size (not even to crush bend style either).

Back to subject... this has always been to what mods you want or going in the future. I've seen DE guys with a lot of mods NA do 3 inch and did just as good as guys run. 2.5". Look around the form.
For a no engine mods and only exhaust I'd say go 2.25". I think the guy running 3 inch is @hauln200sx or something like that. Can't remember his name and I'm to lazy to search for that post were he mentions it. He's one of that last few DE guys and holding on to get some good HP numbers pre-VE De owners days lol

I remember the debate on here that a 3" exhaust is still better even on a mostly stock SR20. You'd have to do a search.

I had a 3" exhaust, no cat, to a Magnaflow straight thru on a heavily modded SR20VE and it was LOUD AS HELL. Ears almost bled. Passengers who had never been in it couldn't take it.

Right now I have a 2.5" exhaust, with a high-flow cat and resonator, ending with a high end Stromung muffler on a bolt-on SR20DE and its not too bad. Drones a bit on the highway as you'd expect, but its certainly liveable.

I'd go with at least 2.5" especially if you plan on doing some bigger mods, like cams and stuff in the future, or hell, even boost. Maybe you have no plans to do so now but you never know, maybe you will. Then you don't have to do it all over again. Again as I mentioned there was a lot of debate in some threads that a 3" exhaust still freed up the most power in even an otherwise stock SR20.

Look at the stock catback, the crushes are so bad that they go down to 1.75". Building a 2.5" exhaust was the best futureproof thing I ever put on the NX. It has handled N/A DE, N/A VE, and now a VET setup. I think it's gonna take a long time until I need to upgrade to 3"...

Ok i got a quick question if one has 2.5 mandrel bent all the way from cat to the tip but i got a 2 1/4 inches inlet from what it looks like oem look alike muffler, will it kill the whole purpose of the 2.5 piping? I also got an hks hi-power muffler with a 2" inlet and apexi world sport2 inlet that starts at 2 1/2 but resduces on the oval canister to 2 inches , im worried that if i put any of those 2 it might kill or restrict the flow or should i just get a 2.5 inlet muffler? Any thoughts sorry but it does relates to this thread

As I understand it, from an exhaust flow perspective, you want the diameter to get larger the further away from the engine you get. This maintains the velocity of the gasses, and creates lower pressure areas further out to increase the scavenging effect.

So having a blockage at the end of the system would be a very bad idea.

Yeah, I spent last night bolting the stock exhaust back onto the B13 so I could get it inspected. Up close and personal staring at it getting bolts installed and hangers hung. It isn't really a puny system, but it just seems small when looking at it up close. May have been the rust falling in my eyes though, hard to say.

Once I've got the inspection done I'm going to be working to get 2.5" piping from the header back so I can put the performance header on for the track. Can't wait...

My 23X whp VE with HS Gen6 3" + full 3" exhaust, only lost 2hp/2ft-lb, peak, with a 2" silencer.

It's a lot quieter with the 2" silencer.
