I recently fought with a GA16DE that did not want its timing set. Every time we put it into timing mode it jumped around all over the place, making us think we had a separated crank pulley.
We solved it by having one person push on the gas pedal slightly while one was setting the timing. This made it stable, all it took was 100rpm more to get it rock solid. Never had this issue with any other nissan, but it's worth a try if you're having a jumping pulley
