RWD crank FWD block oil pump crank spacer issue
Don't flame me yet. I have read and searched but i can't find anyone who has had this issue, done this combination or any solutions so i will start something new, see what others think or if someone can help, or maybe this can help someone else. I did post under the oil pump spacer thread but got no interest.
Im rebuilding one of our race motors that got so hot it cracked the block from the rear frost plug to the frost plug behind the starter. Thankfully the head survived but our knife edged Gti-R crank had cracked in 8-10 places so had to be replaced
The combo is 54C solid lifter head. 53j 20VE block, S14 20DET crank and a high port 53J oil pump. all assembled together ok until i put on the crank pulley and it locked up. I removed it and studied the spacer pictures but the G spec spacer would be too long and stuff up the belt alignment. When i measure from the end of the crank snout to the outside edge of the oil pump gear it is approx 1mm, so not much. Im thinking one of 3 options to fix
1 Lathe down an old de oil pump drive to make a spacer. but its only going to be 1.5mm thick
2 Use a grinder to notch the side of the crank pulley to the same size as the oil pump drive, prob the easiest to do. will this have much effect on the balancing being so close to the crank center? The whole rotating assembly has been balanced together. Also worried about it cutting or not sealing on the crank seal properly
3 Get a VE drive and lathe it down to correct size, this means removing the sump, cover etc again to put it in. I only have one VE spacer and its for my own race motor so im not keen to use this unless i can find a replacement first.
What should i do?
