Thread: Has anyone tried the JWT s5 cams

....with the stock valve train? Clark from JWT says he recommends valve springs but they are not required, but reading over the Manifesto (as I do when I cant sleep like now) it just says "avoid, not a good cam" - has anyone used these and had success or horror stories?

Just get some cheap BC springs why risk it?....far as I know s4 cams were the biggest cam that people has gotten away with on the factory valve train....

I actually have Tomei poncams which have a few degrees more than the S4's, I believe 270, with the stock valve train. I was just wondering about the S5's. I don't have an air compressor to keep the valves from falling down to install the springs. its a pain in the butt

From what I understand, all degrees aren't created equal!

You have to look at the lift and not just the amount of degrees the cam profile has!

I could be wrong tho.

Here is the thing as well, different companies measure the lift in different areas, some on the lobe itself and others at at how far the valve opens.

No you're right, there's a buncha variables.. but the degree is a good indicator usually at least of the size.. if you look at the JWT S3, S4, C1, C2, C3 etc. they get progressively higher..

I think we have been there before... you got cams mixed up. Poncams dont need any stiffer valve springs. And Poncams arent near 270°.

Figure out what cams you have and then make a decision.

And yes, why risk it while BC springs are around 75usd.

Local guy way back had them with stock valvetrain. Car was ran like that for a while. Motor held together fine. Made around 170whp with basic bullshit mods IIRC. Idle sounded so mean with those things.

Yea I know some have made great numbers with them. Of course there are a few horror stories but I wouldn't say its a horrible cam.

Ok, I've have taken enough abuse on this issue. if you don't believe me, here's the evidence. They ARE installed in my 97 200SX SE-R and they work great. They are on the stock valve springs. These are the box my cams came in and documents. I just took these photos:









You can clearly see on the tags (although they are a bit dirty from the install) it says SR20 IN/EX 270
