Thread: Quick general exhaust que

First heres what I got going on. I'm swapping a GA16DE from my wrecked 98 200sx into the shell of a 96 200sx with a blown GA16DE. My 98s exhaust has a brand new Catalytic Converter, but its one piece with the headers. As the 96s exhaust system has the header and cat separate. The first O2 sensors are in the same place on both but the 2nd O2 sensor on the 96 is coming out from underneath the rear seating area into the back of its Cat and on my 98 the 2nd O2 sensor is up near the firewall. My first question is there any noticeable performance difference in the 2 setups, like is one better than the other (cause if not i'd prefer using my newer one piece Header/Cat)? My 2nd question is, I ended up cutting the second O2 sensor on the 96 cause i couldn't get it out of the Cat and figured i'd have to extend the wires anyway up to where my O2 sensor would be in my 98s exhaust system once I drop it in, but whats the best way to do this without effecting the resistance to much so the O2 sensor reads correctly?

Anyone know?

You can remove the 2nd O2 with no adverse effects on how the engine runs. Use what ever exhaust you want and put eh O2 where ever you want.

Cool thanks, basically I had to cut the 2nd O2 sensor off cause it was stuck in the old Cat, and in my new exhaust the 2nd O2 is up near the firewall in the downpipe area so I was gonna splice the cut wiring from the harness thats just hanging into that O2 sensor....and I should be ok? I just wanted to double check

I'm at work so i'll try and get better pictures later from under the car so you can see what I mean but i'll try to piece it together from what I can. Basically you can see from this picture (this is my 98 engine i swapped into the 96) that my header is a header/cat combo. You can see the first O2 sensor right in the top

But the second O2 sensor is in the pipe right after that header/cat combo basically at the firewall (will have to get a picture) and plugged into the 98s harness right at the firewall. In the original exhaust that was on the car the second O2 sensor is coming out from underneath the car from about under the front seats into the original cat which was a separate piece from the header. The wires weren't look enough to reach up to the firewall where the 2nd O2 sensor is now. I had to cut the original 2nd O2 sensor becuz I couldnt get it out of the Cat. I have to extent those now dangling wires to the new one thats up by the firewall....


In this picture the the light blueish color represents where I have wires hanging down from where the original 2nd O2 sensor was going into the back of the cat, I cut. The Yellow represents where I have to extend those wires so I can splice it to the wires of the current exhausts 2nd O2 sensor, but that was had a plug. The original one didnt have a plug, it was literally wires just coming out from the bottom of the car so i Have to splice them wire together regardless.....make sense lol?

Here you go, the problem i see is the whole wiring hanging (back right) from the original 2nd O2 sensor has 1 black wire, 1 white wire and 1 red wire....the current 2nd O2 sensor (the hanging plug front left) has 2 black wires, 1 white wire and 1 blue wire.....how would I go about splicing those wires together? See the distance I have to make up for I was talking about tho?



Also if someone can help me, my Temp gauge on the gauge cluster doesn't seem to be working. I have it plugged in and i'm pretty sure it worked before the swap. I tried another gauge cluster but no dice. Pretty sure the fans kick on and the heater blows hot, what could be my problem?

True but it will throw a code in b14. Not good if you have to pass emissions. Big brother BS

I'm in PA so yeah they got Nazi strict rules on the emissions up here....given what you see in the picture above, how would I splice those wires together since one has 3 and one has 4? You think if I use just regular wire to extend and connect the 2 I should be ok, or what should I do in this situation?

Come up an hour or so and get it inspected and emissions become a moot point.
