SR20DE in a 510
Hey all. This particular build will be going into my Datsun 510. I am planning to stay all motor and at first I was looking at a KA24DE but just today I found someone with an SR20DE that peaked my interest. It is rwd with a sloped valvecover but it is not coloured like the DET's I have always seen be it black or red. Is it the VVT NA motor?

I know I will get flamed for the amound i am willing to spend for power in this NA rather than going turbo but for some reason I would not mind trying it. I would like some tech and such as to what I can expect from a setup as follows....i did do a stroker kit search first but not much came up.

I found a few 2.2L stroker kits on the market
Nice head port with upgraded valvetrain and cams
I want to run ITB's with an AEM for tuning
Lightened flywheel
basically i wanna squeeze what I can out of this setup. What are peoples thoughts on the stroked DE motors? Anyone running something similar? What type of power can I expect roughly (94 octane). What compression do you guys recommend.

Thanks in advance

IF is has a sloped valve cover it is a S14 SR20DE, not a VVL motor.

Yea it is a VTC SR20DE, NA not turbo, even though they offered one in turbo also. As far as a stroker kit and all that is concerned, I think you'll be plenty impressed with the power in the motor from the GET GO, even stock. The power that a 510 came with VS the power of an SR20DE motor is night and day. The 510 is such a light car (especially if this is a 2-door version) that basic things like pop-charger, header, exhaust, lightened flywheel, pullies & cams will yeild quite an impressive machine. Even a higher compression motor like 10-11:1 with those mods will make a car that is PLENTY quick, handles great and WAY funner than it a car that old should be. (make sure you get an LSD in that rear end too)

**Just a side note, I'm pretty sure that Sport COmpact Car has a 510 coupe with a regular SR20DE in it (non-VTC, non-turbo, basically a stock-ish setup) that they have as a rally beater. It looks like hell but they say it handles like a dream (roll cage)and is WICKED fun. Look it up man. Good luck on the build.

I would like to try and add the stroker for the extra torque. I think it will make it that little bit more peppy especially against the KA I was contemplating. Can I use the Tomei stroker kit with the VTC?

Plop in a VG30DE Tho, its very difficult to make more power out of an NA VG30DE. But you'll have plenty of torque

trust me, I think the VTC motor will have plenty. Besides, you can do plenty with some bolts ons and a really good ECU tune. Look up the one that Sport Compact Car has, their's is a fun machine.

Just had a couple of questions on an S14 SR20DE I have found. Is there cams and cam gears that will work with this feature? I found cams/gears on Tomei's site that say something about eliminting the ENVCS...whats that? Can I use different cam gears and get rid of the VTC?

Does AEM make an EMS for it or can i use the one for the S14 SR20DET? Thanks for the tips thus far, I really appreciate it.

I'm sure that Calum can come up with an ECU for the car that can pretty much be controlled on the fly from a laptop.

...except for the VTC. I've actually worked with a shop that has done several of these swaps (510 or datsun coupes, KA or S14 NA). I'd be happy to forward you their e-mail info if you'd like.
