N/A SR20DE Build Thread
Introduction:
I am embarking on my first engine rebuild. I was fortunate enough to get a completely disassembled SR20DE which at the very least included; block, assembled head, pistons, rods, crank and most hardware, cams, intake manifolds, new rings, new head seals and gaskets, and a ton other miscellaneous items which I'll include later.
Background Information:
I already own a 1992 Infiniti G20 with about 170,000 on the clock. It runs great, I recently had an OEM replacement clutch installed, along with brakes all the way around. So yesterday I went on a whim and drove 6 hours round trip to trade my 2003 R6 engine with less than 3,000 on the clock for a completely disassembled SR20DE with a few rebuild parts. It's said to have been out of a ~1996 Infiniti G20 that had around 120,000 miles and is reported to have been in running condition.
I feel that it was a fair trade, the R6 engine was a freebie from a friend out of his old track bike. I figured a spare block, head, etc. was worth having more than an unused R6 engine. I will post detailed pictures which I would love for all other users to examine and give me advice on. The block looks to seem in good condition, as with the head as far as I can tell. My only concern is with the condition of the camshafts, they are somewhat disheartening looking.
Things I need advice on:
- I contacted a reputable local machine shop who are extremely experienced with domestic engines, though the guy I spoke with said; he isn't intimidated to do simple work on the block although he has never worked on an SR20 before, he said he could do a hone and full cleaning for $75, is that a fair price?
- If I decided to have it bored out, should I ask this experienced machinist to do it even though he has no experience on my engine?
- I live near Lawrence, KS; anyone familiar with any good machinist within an hour or so from here?
