It may be a little expensive at first but it's well worth it in the long run, if you want the best of both worlds, Just pick yourself up a 2.5 electric cutout and run a muffler with the piping size slightly bigger than stock. Some days I'm in the mood for a loud sounding exhaust (mainly when I'm with the boys) After a long days work dealing with exhaust noise is the last thing I want to hear at the end of the day.

I run a 2.5 exhaust with a straight pipe and STI muffler. I make good power too and its pretty quiet unless you punch it or keep it below 4k rpm (at 4k it sounds fine to me, just a bit louder when comparing to running a cat) I'm 18, drive a purple nissan, with a racing seat + harness, and Bronze wheels. Cops never give me trouble. They don't even look at me. They look at my buddy with a bone stock 2.5rs more than they look at me. If im concerned about "noise", i just cruise by in 5th, or throw it in neutral. You can make noise on demand and keep it quiet just a easy.

Edit: for my power gains, I made 5hp and 4lbstq. I could feel the gains throughout the powerband, and street driving became a bit easier since I had more torque down low. If you go to my progress thread, you can see what things have been done to my car.

I hate raspy exhausts. I'm embarrassed for every raspy honda, nissan, toyota I hear on the streets. Rasp is like running thru a mall yelling "I HAVE AIDS!" And trying to get chicks numbers. Its very attractive to Haters (like me) and police.
I thought rasp is from rusty flanges or gaskets tapping each other bc the car owner was a lazy prick, but I may as well mention what rasp really is.
Rasp is created when sound waves from the exhuast becomes turbulant ie; the design of the header and exhaust isn't tuned/made to keep turbulance out of it its audio range ie 0-7500rpm.... that's why some exhausts rasp on at a specific range and not others. Bad tuning.
Things that make rasp more significant and don't create much power, I oppose. I don't like test pipes, cat deletes what ever its called for N/A if its going to make a car sound more like shit than it already does. But if u got it or think about it I don't care.

I have a b13 with SR20 with 4-2-1 headers and 2.5 pipe with a blown resonator, which I'm thinking of removing alltogether and replace with a piece of 2.5" pipe.

what effects would a straight pipe setup (no resonator) have on gas mileage, didnt see anyone address this part of it.

As the "old-timers" on the SE-R list used to call it, that rasp sounds like a thousand "angry-bees" coming after you. I guess maybe it happened to someone and they made the connection What's real bad is sometimes you can't tell the difference between an actual aftermarket exhaust and a stock exhaust with a hole in it somewhere on Hondas
