Thread: removing Oil pump housing HELP

so i need to reseal my front main seal since it is leaking..i managed to get the lower and upper oil pans removed, but from what i can see there is a few screws and 10mm bolts holding on to the part i need to remove. do these need to be removed or can they just come right off with the housing?

Also! I was reading the FSM and it states in order to replace the oil pump the Cylinder Head must be removed..does this need to be done as well?

you can replace the front main seal with the oil pump on the car. I have removed a oil pump with the head on its just more work and really hard with the motor in the car.

Just take off the belts and crank pulley and then use a seal removal tool like this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WMR-W1219

If you don't have a that seal remover tool, a flathead screwdriver will do. Just be gentle with it and you'll be fine.

If your trying to remove the cover you need to remove the two 10mm bolts that are on the front side of the head going down into the top of the cover. You dont need to take the head off to do it. Ive done it several times with the head on.

If it was your front main seal leaking then you could have done that with everything in place and just removing the pulley.

But if your wanting to reseal the cover itself then yeah make sure all the 10mm bolts are out of the cover and the 2 going down through the head into the top part of the cover.

A little tip when putting it back together. Take the oil pump drive/spacer off the crank before putting it back up. It will give you alot more room to maneuver the pump back into place. Your best bet also is to apply silicon to the top of the cover that meets the headgasket as well. You will see what im talking about. Make sure all surfaces are clean. There is also an o-ring that goes on the front cover as well that comes up from the oil pump where it transistions into the block. Good idea to replace that o-ring. Its a standard size o-ring and should be able to match it up with one at a parts store.

Once you get the pump back on, align the oil pump with the spacer and gently tap the spacer back onto the crank making sure its not hiting the oil pump drive. As long as you line it up good it should go right in. This eliminates having to try to align the oil pump drive up while putting the pump back up and gives you more up and down movement to prevent smearing the silicon all over possibly creating leaks.
