How do I know. I sell used starters

B15 starter left, VE B13-B14 starter right

I want to start by saying that from what I have read, you are one of the most knowledgeable people on this site. So when I ask you this, please don't take it the wrong way. I am not doubting you... I just want an explanation please. I have a b14 and I bought a starter from a member on this site. This is what the starter he sent me looked like.(not exact picture) it had that half cone shield on it over the gear... This is also not the starter in my car, but it has no shield at all like this one there was one more tooth on the one that was sent to me than the one that came off my car. My friend and I tried very hard to make it work but could not. We got another one that has no shield and went in easily the first time. Can you please explain why. I am pretty good at fixing things, but in no way have the mechanical aptitude that you do, and my goal is to learn as much about the sr20 as possible. Thanks in advance for any knowledge you can give me.

ok so just to clear things up..

All FWD starters will work with each other, Tho the actual "starter" to say, is shaped/sized slightly differently.??

yes unless it is a GTIR or 20V motor which runs the starter that looks like the one below. The stater below will work on all SR20s FWD and is also very commonly found on B14s. The other staters with the long nose will not work on GTIR and 20Vs that have the larger diam 225mm and 240mm flywheel.
