Thread: sr20de with sr20ve pistons (it happend)

ok guys searched my butt off but couldn't really find an answer to my question, I've found what the compression is for bolting a ve head on a de but nothin for putting a de head on a ve bottom or ve pistons in a de.

basically my friend got rod knock and another friend has some 20ve pistons, rod, crank. so what i want to do is take the VE stuff and put it in the DE.

my question is as title suggests, what compression would a 9.5:1 de have with sr20ve pistons? would they even work or would the valves hit because the reliefs are in the wrong spot or something?

i did a compression test on the engine and it reads almost 180 across all 4 cylinders and his cams are good, its a jdm de an has to have less then 100k on it, we put his powder coated valve cover on yesterday an the gasket didnt hold so it spewed oil out everywhere while he was driving down the freeway an so now it knocks really bad

this is just to hold him over till he can get a VE, Obviously

nah we just need to get something working.. we can use the stock pistons if need be, compressions still fine.

Should be just fine. The valve relation is pretty close if not the same in the combustion chamber. The ve pistons would probably yeild about a 10:1 compression ratio. They are pretty much a flat top piston for the most part with valve reliefs.

i was kinda thinking that to, or maybe like 9.8 or something cause the reliefs

theres his coated sr20ve pistons, they are dished and have reliefs..

so maybe if we use the ve pistons he can run some monster cams! lol

so probably around 9.5:1 if they have the same size dish as the de pistons. Compression will be roughly the same. Dont know how much the valve reliefs take away but cant be much I would imagine. maybe 9.2:1 at the lowest

i wish dude had a few hunny to spear so i could get him some 16 pistons then some cams an he would have a sick little de

but this is really just his dd so gotta do what we gotta do.. like i said i comp tested it an it had good numbers so if need be we will just reuse the pistons..

im hoping just a few rod bearings are bad an the crank an rods arent damaged but ya never know :-\

Those ve pistons looked different than the set that was in my ve. I remember Miko mentioning there were two different compression ratios that came on the ve's as well 10.3:1 and 11:1 Im thinking the pistons in that picture are the 10.3:1 pistons. i could have swore my ve pistons looked a hell of a lot different. Ill see if i still have a pic of them.

those are bluerb240's Coated pistons, i forget what kind of coating but ya..

the sr20ve 20v pistons are the 11:1 i believe and ya your right the ones in the pic are the 10.3's
