well he put some miles on it today (about 40) and we noticed a few things..

1. rear main is leaking, either the new one we put in isn't sealing or forgot to rtv where it bolts on)
2. the hose that goes from the metal tube to the block where the temp sensors are is leaking.
3. i think the exhaust cam (maybe intake also) is off a tooth, it doesnt run right when the dist is in the middle.. its sluggish and when warm has a lopey idle when fully advanced the lopey idle goes away but still kinda sluggish.

aside from that its doin ok im pretty confident the engine itself is gonna be fine, we just need to take care of the small issues that surfaced an she'll be a good little runner again

thanks dewd

i think we did "ok" for our first engine "rebuild" lol i expected a few things to need attention so thats ok we will get it squared away in a few days

the engine sounds good tho it doesn't sound like its going to implode or anything so thats a good sign heheh i revved it out to like 7200 or so, but with the timing bein off a little it was kinda sluggish.. im gonna do a compression test on it again tomorrow just to be sure

Yeah Frankenstien or MacGyver! Good job keeping another sr on the road

OK

so i verified that the cam/crank timing is correct.. YAY ME! got it on the first time an didn't have to touch it

i swapped my spark plug cables on there an the weird miss @ idle went away.. we also timed it to 15* using a timing light..

did a warm compression test with throttle open an only got 150 across all 4 cylinders, it had more before buut at least it was really consistent smack dab on 150.

took the car for a drive an still the same shit it just doesn't want to make it to red line an it feels like a pussy..

so after more inspection we noticed the #4 injector was intermittently working, sometimes it would sound like a subie, sometimes it wouldn't.. so changed it out an it seemed to work fine at first then we went for a drive an now its got this crazy bog/hesitation bull shit going on.. PISSED!

gonna take a test light to the injector plug and if no juice going to swap out for another ecu.. if still no juice we're going to rewire that injector.

then HOPEFULLY the son of a bitch will run properly.. i really dont think theres an issue with the engine itself, it sounds good when idles right an when revved, no weird sounds or anything.. so we'll see, i'll keep yall posted..

heres a few pics..

dont mind the dark colored links not matchin the sprockets, engines been ran so yeah..

10 an 12 o'clock and 20 pins and 11 links

Crankshaft sprocket is off, possible pulley has damaged rubber making timing off at TDC. Check and make sure that it's correct at the crankshaft, like stick a long firm stick in the hold and watch it go up and down and then see when it stops going up and starts coming down, turn half the opposite direction half the rotation needed and you have TDC. THEN set timing byt getting all slack out of the exhaust cam FIRST, then move onto the intake cam, don't do the intake cam first. Try it again.

Compression should be in the upwards of 180-190 Psi on an NA engine. You did get new piston rings right?

Wow... forgot to even read you are using VE internals... Compression should be way up there, over 210Psi even with a DE head. I didn't read anywhere you replaced the piston rings and hone the cylinders. You just put an egg shape inside a circular hole, all piston rings wear to an extent and seal the cylinder. Without new rings and a fresh hone, they won't seal and you'll be stuck with that compression.

i do believe this is only a temporary fix till he goes ve or det

When I did the timing chain I did it with the head on just not bolted down an the pulley seemed good, then I put the oil pum on an the marks lined up perfect.. So I'm gonna rule that out..

And no my friend couldn't afford new rings the low compression he can live with till he gets a better engine :-/

I'm pretty sure the poor performance is due to the #1 injector intermittently working I just need to go over there monday with my tester an find out why that injector isn't working right.. I swapped it out an everythig an still same problem
