A ve would require higher octane. Which defeats the purpose of keeping my fuel expenses lower.

Yup exactly, unless you stick in DET pistons into it. Which means $300 ontop of the $700 for rebuild. Which is honestly a waste of time unless you are boosting.

You should be more then fine with 87 gas and just about all bolt on you throw at it (might as well add pulleys to that list, flywheel is another good one but might render you with lower MPG's). When you start spinning the distro cap or get a tuned ECU, that's when you need to sip the expensive drink.

It's cool man. Sorry I forgot to mention someone recently posted a bin to suit my needs in the tuning section. Thanks though.

If have the stock ecu then you can run 87 if the timing is left stock. I have C2 cams and valve springs and I ran 87 in my se-r. My timing is set at 15* so I loose a bunch of low end torque not using my jwt ecu. The only time you have to get higher octane is if you advance the timing more than 17*. Otherwise you'll be good with bolt ons minus an ecu upgrade.

I know bolt-ons increase the engines ability to breathe air and expel exhaust. However assuming you go with I/H/E/Cams/Outlaw spacers will 87 octane still be ok if you stick with 9.5:1 and stock timing?

I think I'd enjoy a nice daily driver setup with mild mods, and the ability to use 87 octane. The reason I'd like to use 87 octane is because of current fuel prices.

I've never really messed with engine mods on these cars, so that is why I ask the rest of you. Maybe somebody has some experience with these questions.

Would larger cams require the use of higher octane fuel? (Anybody running S3/S4/C1/C2/C3/BC2/BC3/etc with 87 octane)

This is my goal in my daily. Fully bolted to the egde of being able to run 87.
I drive alot of miles and want to see what I can squeeze out.

I would too on my dd/wife's car, but since P11's are so fat it needs at least a VE to feel decent. So far on my VE-T P11 I got 23 city and 34 highway, thus I feel confident in an N/A VE getting better mpg's .

differences in gas prices dont really matter that much..a 10 cents/gallon difference will yield what..a dollar difference when filling one of our cars from empty?

just my .02 ..(no pun intended )

i think you'll be fine. with my setup (s4's,i/h/e/outlaw spacers and a few other things), my dad ran 87 for a while with 15 degrees of timing on a jwt ecu.
