N/A Mods and 87 Octane
Hey guys I was pondering this recently. Adding bolt-ons to a DE will this require the use of higher octane fuel?

I know bolt-ons increase the engines ability to breathe air and expel exhaust. However assuming you go with I/H/E/Cams/Outlaw spacers will 87 octane still be ok if you stick with 9.5:1 and stock timing?

I think I'd enjoy a nice daily driver setup with mild mods, and the ability to use 87 octane. The reason I'd like to use 87 octane is because of current fuel prices.

I've never really messed with engine mods on these cars, so that is why I ask the rest of you. Maybe somebody has some experience with these questions.

Would larger cams require the use of higher octane fuel? (Anybody running S3/S4/C1/C2/C3/BC2/BC3/etc with 87 octane)

I run C2 cams, and have had the car tuned with 98ron. However I could have put the crappiest of the crappy fuel in, then had it tuned to suit. It's all about the tune!
However if you're running stock tune, I can't see any reason to require higher octane fuel, unless you're doing alot to advance the timing (whether that be by cams, or base timing set at the distributer)

You should be fine with the 87 octane so long as you do not modify the settings on the factory ecu. They do recommend that you use one heat range colder on the plugs though. You could probably run 87 octane with any of those cams you have listed above with a proper retune but at that point I don't understand why you'd stick with 87 octane.

I don't think I'd go as large as the C series cams. Mostly because of the extra expense of getting springs. For a daily driver, the S cams would suit my needs. I've just been thinking a nice daily with some oomph that I can still pump 87 octane into would be great.

I have a lowport with S4s + I/H/E, and thermoblok spacers running 87oct 15deg timing in my NX, and it runs perfect. It'll be running even better once I get it tuned

Why not just swap a VE?

Cause it's not what he wants. Alot of ppl like just some simple NA power. I enjoy mine. Sure VE and boost are more powerful, and easier, but NA is fun in it's own way.

BTW you never sent me that S4 bin.

As long as you keep your base timing at 15* or lower you will be fine.'

Doesn't VE require 93 gas with 10.3:1 compression ratio?
