I have a greater respect for Mike after watching the video. Sh*t happens, it's how you recover from it that makes all the difference. He still came in second after all that. Glad to see you back, Mike. Hope you had fun out there, hope your back is feeling better. Quick question, are you running an oil cooler on the VE and if you are what brand? Was thinking of going VE in the track car but after this thread may rethink my options.

Whats the compression of the dog II? Higher comp always helps with midrange punch. What about 20v cams to bring back the midrange?

I was thinking the same thing. Seems like every time you run the 1.6 cams you lose a little bottom end. So running the 20V cams will definitely help. I like the 1.6 cams in my application but I am FI and having the torque peak later seems to help smooth the powerband a bit.

The N1 seem like a peaky cam, but then again, the VZR came with a short ratio box as well.

Yeah this thread springs to mind

http://www.sr20-forum.com/vvl/9990-went-dyno-last-night-tell-me-what-you-think.html

20vs vs fs4, The 20v's have an awesome midrange, less power but huge midrange. he later dynos the fs4 against the n1 and midrange is around the same.

Now I dont know all the details of the 2 set up. But viprdudes umbrella comment seems a bit inaccurate. You are comparing a high comp engine with a cleaned up head cams designed for huge midrange that obviously match the gearing great. To a stock engine with some 1.6 cams slapped in and a power band that doesn't match the gearing all that well. I am not sure if the gearbox and diff gears are the same, but if the are its fairly obvious why the de is stronger everywhere but the long straights.

edit: Just in case its taken the wrong way I am not saying mike doesn't know his stuff. From what I hear he has done a lot of de development and as someone said earlier 3 of the top 5 cars out there are built by him! Just posting my thoughts, nothing more

Chris.

"Good to see Mike back" would have been good enough.

I will rebut with a three year old comment of, you are inaccurate, sir.

11.0:1 (VE) vs 12.5:1 (DE)

Both with cams not included in that original engine. One is a factory Nissan genuine part, the other is not. The head in the VE beats the DE every day of the week.

A VE is infinitely better when you take that engine and better match it with gearing offered in the 6 speed transmissions to keep the engine in the upper RPM range.

EDIT: I messed up compression ratios. (I think)

The 3 year old comment made me laugh

Yeah I agree with what you are saying. Got to have everything matched right

For most of us who daily drive our cars, a VE is better because it has that gross top end power.

Think of it this way with a DE. You get high compression pistons, nice cams, proper header and you will make gobs of torque.
