Thread: NA SR20DE Emission Question...

Hello People, i need to ask a question about the build im going to do.

This is basicaly the parts im using:
-JWT S4HL cams
-SR16VE Pistons
-Cometic +0.5mm Head Gasket
-Nistune ECU

I calculated that the CR would be 11.2:1... but now i have an issue...

How would the engine behave in matters like Emission control? this is my problem... here we have to test emission every year, so i need to know, with this set up, would the car go way high on emissions or what would happen?

CR stands for Costa Rica?

It depends on the emission levels you are requiered to pass, but there is no way you will pass emissions with those cams, you will have to get the cams down for the emissions test.
Thats what I did when I had to take my yearly emissions test, I had S4 cams and I just took them out and replaced with stock cams for emissions

Put on an extra cat. Youll pass. Just make sure they are back to back as close to the header as possible because they have to be hot to work. If you have a brand new cat and its cold wjen you do the test it will fail.

AN extra cat is a waste of money, you only have to have one cat that's working. When it's time for your test, retard your timing as much as possible so the car will still run. It will suck and not rev or even get out of it's own way. Limp it down to the inspection station and pass your test. Drive home, reset, and enjoy.

BTW, this will only work for an OBD1 car that has to go on the rollers/sniffer. If it is OBD2 you will need all your emission equipment present and working.

For the other guys, would the higher Compression Ratio help me with the emissions... what beto says is an option, tu keep the stock cams and change them for the test...

Higher Compression make the NoX unhappy.

Of course you only NEED one cat. But two will help if you cant pass the sniffer because of high compression. Ive seen it done and it will work. I dont just blow smoke out of my ass.

I have a buddy of mine in Denver that did it on his turbo KA cuz even though it had a new cat it wouldnt pass. So he cut his exhaust, welded on some flanges, welded on some flanges to the extra cat, took the pipe he cut out and welded some flanges on that and only puts the extra cat on to pass emmissions. He goes home and takes out the extra cat, puts the pipe in to close the gap and thats it. No fucking with timing.
