Recomended Compression for SR20DE Build
Hello Guys, im planing on building a SR20DE with the new S4HL cams, and im planing on using SR16VE N1 pistons or SR16VE pistons to get the compression higher.

What would some of you recomend for this setup?
-SR20DE Lowport
-SSAC Header w/ 3" Exhaust
-3" Warm Air Intake
-S4HL cams
-High CR pistons
-Nistune ECU
-Misc Internals...

These are some things that i know,
-I emailed Brian Crower people some time ago to ask for the CR that would be good for de Stage 2 Cams, they told me to go with 11:1.

-I understand that SR16VE N1 Pistons would give me 10.9:1 CR

-I understand that SR16VE Pistons would give me 11.8:1 CR

-S4HL cams are more agresive than BC Stage 2, so i think that the recomended CR should be more than 11:1

Is there some posibility that i can use de SR16VE pistons with a thicker Head Gasket to lower de compression a little bit?

BTW Where i live, the best pump gas you can get is 91 octane...

This is a little comparrison for the cams

Cams Duration Lift (in) Lift (mm)
BC Stage 2 264º .475" 12.06
JWT S4 266º .464" 11.78
JWT S4HL 266º .484" 12.29

The plan is to get a 170whp SR20DE that has a nice idle and a great power curve... so im not going to put JWT C2 cams or BC Stage 3 cams...

Sounds like a nice little setup. Go with the SR16 pistons and use a VET headgasket.

How thicker does de VET Headgasket is? I was planing on using a Cometic Head Gasket...

The engine also is going to have other internals to make it run safe, so it would be used for going to work in the days, and going to the dragstrip or for a trackday in the weekends...

I hope that with a good tunning it would have a sweet spot from 6500rpms to 8K... I would be the most powerfull SR20DE in the area...

But as im asking i need to know what compression ratio should i use. I have Emailed JWT but havent answered....

Get a better header than the SSAC

Ulysses, some people had told me that, in fact i would get something bigger, but at this moment i will be usign a 3" Cutout so the engine would get some high end power... but that would be just for trackdays... it will be closed for daily use...

I am only 10whp shy of your goal using BC stage 2 cams. That is the only internal modification to my engine. Everything else is external.

Just with those pistons, you will be at 170whp (or more) along with the mods listed.

I do not have a lightweight flywheel, or lightweight pullies installed either which would only help!

I want a VE now, however. This DE runs well, but I want to hear VVL pop.

Viprdude, i have seen your project and i like it a lot, congrats for that numbers...

I love to hear when the VVL kicks in(even like to say "VVL kicks in"), but here where i live, VVLs are now so common that i would like to have something diferent... even something that can win against a VVL...

Im planning on building the SR20DE and then start putting other bolt ons into it, llike Lightweighted parts, big maf, big TB, and so... but at the start i realy want to get the engine done so i dont have to open it again... Thats why i want to know the exact number i need to get the most out of those cams...
