and then again, theres the 300+hp b14s on youtube. i dunno. like i said, ive got both a vq powered altima, and a sr20 turbo nx. if your dealing with factory (02 and up) ecu, yeah, uh that sucks. expensive, and a headache to tune. THATS why i suggest a 3rd gen maxima ecu as a starting point. use aem fic if you want, or jim wolf, or get a maxima aem stand alone used. or megasquirt. i mean, i hate to say it, but tuning is nolonger an issue for anything. You just have to know what the hell your doing. plugg and play? no not really. easy? nothing worth doing is easy. Ill i need is the mount kit.....an hell at this rate, i might look into having our fab guy do it for me. i think wiring is pretty straight forward, if using older harnessess.

Talking whp. Vq's are like 215-220whp stock depending on the dyno.

I couldnt agree with you more on the fact of having a beast n/a car over a boosted car, the torque and power band is so much better overall and smoother. Drivability is much better also, as you stated. Its the factor of if you either want to spend the money, or have the money to blow to make it fast n/a. There's a 372whp 350z without being stroked. Sure the power is there, its all the setup and tune.

If you want to spend the money on it though, yes stroke the vq to a 4.1L, proper head work, biggest cams you can get, ITB's, you should make 400+ whp easily. And a 400whp N/A vq in a b13 would literally destroy almost anything on the road, and easily run 10's. But the cost to do that and make it work would be ridiculous.

you will never find an earlier vq making 300whp with just an exhaust and a tune. Now, the new 09 maxima motor, yes. Surra TT made i think it was 302whp with headers, 3" exhaust, and a tune. He has a haltech though, so theres more money lol. But the 09+ maxima motors have variable intake and exhaust timing, where the earlier vq's only have intake. And they also have a much bigger intake manifold plenum, and a 75mm TB instead of the 70mm the earlier models have, and much bigger head ports for intake and exhaust. I'd recommend the 09+ maxima motors if i was going to do the swap, i wouldnt have it any other way.

240whp no tune for a fwd vq35

my boy made 276whp with a 03 vq35 from a maxima, with jwt8 cams.headers exht with no tune(stock ecu) on 93 oct.. now he has a standalone(pro efi) and he is going to tune on e85 (should be able to increase 20-30+whp) and runs 12.3@115 mph in a heavy ass full body spec-v. should be alot quicker when he tunes

depending on the dyno. Do some searching around on the Maxima forums for stock dynos.. you will see. And he made 276whp, but he has cams, headers, and exhaust. Like i said, you will need alot of work to hit 300whp with a vq if it isnt an 09+. You just proved my point. Most the people dont even want to do cams because of how much time it takes to do them, plus the cost of the cams and springs.

Not hating on the vq, its an awesome motor. I have jwt s1's i got for cheap. 3" exhaust, headers, BOP, plenum spacers, 3.5" CAI, tune and blah blah, should be a lil more then that 276whp, although i never got it dynoed. Spent way too much on it, and should of just boosted it from the start for the money i have spent lol.

Sfr manifolds are a waste of money. SSIM manifolds are the best bang for the buck for anyone who has a spare manifold theyre willing to cut up. You lose a little torque but the gains in the higher rpm's are worth it.

09 motors are to much$$$$$$$$ u can get a 02-06 vq35 for around 800-1k i purchased mine 04 vq35 925 with 6-k ijs...

i think u need to check the maxima forums again... also the only cars that do not make power with the vq35 swap is the 4gen maxima because most of them replace the vq35 timing components for the vq30 timing componets to use the old ecu and harness theres a 20-40hp loss in just doing that.. ItS like replace the SR20VE timing componets to use thw SR20DE timing components.

ok, well i dont know that a dyno was involved, but im talking about tuning for power, not safety. AND god, if its like mine, with the cvt, then yeah, you wont ever make power. cvt factory tuning is done off transmission speed, so, i would never even bother. I keep hearing about up rev, not impressed. A auto car will always make less than a manual, and like i said, my friend david put a lot of work into the tune. ALOT. car was nasty, back when he had it he was putting a beating on modded srt4s, and keeping up with evos(keep in mind, this was 4 years ago). My issue with the vqs and power is that they are in chassis that limit your tuning, due to the cranky factory ecu. if you remove the factory ecu from the equation, and use the motor as a base point in a car with a easy to tune ecu, you will find power very easily (in conjunction with a load based dyno).

For the money, i agree. But they do have decent gains lol. I have a Custom Manifold, and a SSIM'd one thats on the car now. Gained 2mph trap speeds on every pass with the custom manifold over the SSIM.



Its the 5AT, not the cvt. God that cvt is awful, idk why they started using that. Its junk lol. I agree, a standalone will make you way more power then the stock ECU will.

I put a beating on stage 2 SRT4's, Took a few evo8 and 9's. Car surprises alot of people, beat alot of cars that i shouldnt be running with or beating with the factory numbers they supposedly have.
