flywheel woes
I'm trying to find out what would be a good weight for a flywheel on a N/A engine with just bolted stuff like a 2.5" e-bay, but good maintenance and a lowish stock weight.

I learned that I can get a 9 lbs. flywheel and that 18 lbs. is the stock weight.

I also learned that the engine needs the inertia of the flywheel, or in other words, it needs *some* weight.

However, I don't understand why it should have weight. On the other hand, I understand a 4 stroker can't really do without one so it's there and lowering the weight by exactly 50% seems a little troublesome to me.

But what weight would be good for my setup?

I only need the first 3 gears and I won't WOT at 4th or 5th, because 70mph is about the maximum speed I can go overhere and I don't want to play with my license.

Also, I'l be driving the car mostly without passenger and I also don't add weight to it, there is no radio for example. I'm expecting to loose 100 lbs of stock weight and the car still look stock.

I have 15" rims close to stock weight, the bigger exhaust gives less resistance noticably when I lift my foot of the gas pedal and what I am looking for is the best 0 - 60mph time I can get and still have a DD. I can't sacrifice all the low end I have gained, yet the high end noticeably is 'complaining' when I do a trafficlight sprint.

Also, I would really like to be able to take over another car on the public road in 5th gear without having to push the gas pedal deep.

Friend of mine told me I probably can get the stock flywheel down to 10 lbs and he also is able to put that in Solidworks and on the other hand it is a street car so I don't worry to much about heat.

I wonder, what would be a good weight since I really did read a lot about lighter flywheels and also 9 lbs. isn't good for turbo, for example 10.4 lbs is, what does this mean for me?

thanks in advance

I have this:
XTD® PROLITE RACIN FLYWHEEL SENTRA G20 NX 200SX SR20DE - eBay (item 190507161666 end time Mar-30-11 08:33:39 PDT)

and the strongest single disk clutch act has, and the clutch is a lot harder to handle than the flywheel, I don't notice much differnce from stock and mine feels a lot lighter than 12 lbs.

edit: this is on a t25 turbo b13

I just installed a lightweight flywheel I purchased from Stillen. It is an AASCO flywheel,I've been told it looks just like a Fidanza.Anyway,it weighs 9 lbs,and doesn't affect driveability at all.Except it makes it much betterI have mild bolt ons, making 141 wheel HP,and I'm using a stage 2 ACT clutch. The clutch has the same stock "feel",but with a higher clamping pressure. The car has been my daily driver and autocross car for 8 years, and the old clutch was getting weak.If you are planning on going turbo, maybe the turbo guys will chime in,but for n/a,it seems to be the way to go.You'll notice the difference in acceleration, shifts are smmother, and I seem to be getting a couple of miles more per gallon.Win,win,win.

Paid $295 + shipping for the flywheel,$425 for the ACT clutch.Clutch came with b15 disc, throwout and pilot bearing, clutch tool.Stage 2 pressure plate.Feels no different than stock, and clamps like a bitch.I was slipping the old clutch, due to the 15x9 wheels with 275 Hoosier A6's.Go figure.

A lighter fly wheel will not hurt anything. Not sure what you are worried about. It will help you rev faster and less rotating mass = less drag on the engine.

if i am reading his post correctly i believe he is worried about loosing way down low torque from loss of inertia. thus affecting driveability while cruising.
