But as for hp gains, i's say no more than 2, it probably varies between different motors since the condition of parts (ps components) may be a factor. Just like everyone said, it will clean up your engine bay. It will probably save you about 20lbs +/-. But I think it depends on the preference of the driver. A decent example would be the Lotus Elise/Exige, they dont have powersteering(iirc,the newer ones at least) since they were designed to give the driver a good "feel" for the road.

we go to dynop on a DE engine
very stok car. 145 HP on a DE only bolts
we remove PS/AC a put the alternator on the rear and yo go arms safe we put B12 Steering rack. they come W/O P/S
cars goes 155.. 10WHP !!!! the facts is putting the alternator on rear you only use one belt and more less presure to the pulley thats its more HP..
and belive me the weit reduction its very very significant.. Compresor, Compresor braket, A/C lines.. A/C ducts / Vaporator/ Power Stering Lines, Pum and Rack are more ligth than B13. less 1 belt.. i supost over 30 LBS reduction..maybe more..

I don't mean this is a bad way but if you think steering effort is tough with no power steering IDK. Given while not moving it is hard to overcome the resistance, but if you are even rolling just a little bit I would say it is just as easy to steer as a power steering car. Then again maybe I just have strong arms.
