1989-1991 Porsche 944 3.0 liter inline 4 cylinder twin cam. Simple 4 cylinder engine. Nothing fancy. 208hp at 5800rpm with 207ft pounds at 4100rpm. I'm sure there are even more powerful mass produced 4 cylinders that are "simple". Maybe the S14 engine from BMW's E30 M3? (This is in response to your naturally aspirated comparison.)

Comparing turbo engines of the time (not current Mitsu Evo engines and the like), I have got to give the 4 cylinder turbo crown to the Porsche 944 again. The Porsche 944 Turbo made 247HP and 243TQ in 1998 from a turbo four cylinder. An engine better in most ways compared to the SR20DET.

But we're not hear to talk about Porsche I guess. :o

Is that good? I have seen 1000 whp sr20vets and 700 whp sr20dets run all the time. Just check out your beloved Mazworks. Porsche 4 cylinders as most their 4 cylinder endeavors failed to deliver the performance they need in their heavy ass cars. There H6s is a different story but Porsche and 4 cylinder really do not go good together.

I would never mod a standard SR20 engine unless I was to put a ve head and computer in it. I like getting 30 mpg and having decent power I.e enough to kill new versas, fits, and pririus.

Thats why im surprised that more people with de's are not running quicker. I had a short ram intake w/jwt pop charger, ur 2 piece pulley set, jun ultralightweight flywheel, spec clutch, ssac 2 1/4" secondary header, and 2 1/4" exhaust w/ no cat. and yes jwt s3 cams.

I would figure a better 4-1 header, 3" exhaust, s4 cams, and maybe a realtime ecu to tune it would get a de in a full inteior se-r into the 13's very easily.

I was running on Falken Azenis back when they had the 205 55 14 size. 2.1 60ft

I remember running a black boosted single cam civic ex and he went like 14.8@98mph. I smoked the crap out of him. The all motor hondas, well, I can say i never lost to one.

Also, Here in yuma, my buddy peter used to be the one all motor import to beat. Back then the only cars faster than him was his buddies big turbo eagle talon and a turbo civic hatch. The civic hatch was not much faster than his b14 either. Other than that, there was not a honda in town that could touch his b14 back in the day with just simple bolt ons. The only thing hondas had going for them back then was a bit better suspension platform and a stronger trans.

Best time on street tires was 14.8

well, i'm not as far off from my power goals as I thought. i didn't realize that little amount of power resulted in 14's.

i may bore to 88mm and save on shipping the block to mazworx and on sleeves and just use S4 or BC2 cams instead of something that requires springs & retainers.. this would certainly simplify things.

I bet with my current mods, I might be at 15 flat by now

jwt S3 cams/ecu
ssac header w/2.5" collector
2.5" mandrel bent exhaust
cat removed in place of resonator
wrx STi muffler
all 4 UR pullies
jwt motor mounts
ghetto airbox mod with K&N drop in fliter
no weight reduction and I weigh 285 lbs

things i DON'T have yet, that may help me break into 14's
wideband
tune
lightened flywheel
performance clutch
hotshot 3" CAI (need to install it, it's sitting in my living room)

Slicks and a clutch will get you into the 14's probably. What times are you getting now for 60ft also what mph?

well, i'm no drag strip junkie, for me, an approximate 1/4 mile figure is a way of letting me know how quick my car is.. more so than a HP figure - because gearing, weight - etc... all factor in and knowing how fast it moves down the strip is a better measuring stick of what I got under the hood. It's something that I could replicate on the street, more than a HP figure.

I seriously never launch on the street like I would at a drag stip, but just knowing what a 14.0 second car feels like, and a 14.8 second car feels like (my E36 M3 and 3.5L 6MT Maxima, respectively) ... I would be content if this car was "capable" of mid 13's.. and that now seems very possible for a LOT cheaper than I was expecting.. lopey idle, a car capable of mid 13's seems not all that far away financially..

ported polished lowport head
BC2 cams
wideband
tune
lightened flywheel
performance clutch
hotshot 3" CAI (need to install it, it's sitting in my living room)
88mm bore
the ASP header sitting in my bedroom

on top of what I have (left out items i would replace):
2.5" mandrel bent exhaust
cat removed in place of resonator
wrx STi muffler
all 4 UR pullies
jwt motor mounts

this car should be capable of mid 13's from what i'm gathering in this thread. no?

The points about the Porsche are valid. Dollar for dollar, though, the Nissan is pretty good. The 944 was a 2.5L engine that made 150 hp. By 1991 it was a 3.0L that made 208 hp.

Part of my point is the apples-oranges comparison of Porsche to Nissan, a Porsche, even one built as an "inexpensive" car has fewer compromises than a Nissan. I haven't dug through the whole production numbers study but I would hazard a guess that there were more SR20 powerd cars built each year than all Porsches combined.

I didn't know this but my buddy just got back from visiting panama, and he told me that their are sentra's and 200sx' everywhere down there. He said you can buy them brand new off the showroom floor. B14's of course. Pretty wild.

Now that is flat out awesome.

I told my wife that if I ever got to old to drive a manual car that I would convert my SE-R to automatic just so I could drive it.
