As nice as it would be, it's not likely that it'd happen. Wouldn't it be nice, though?
Sure, VTAK motors may be punchier, but, the SR is just too nice to just "disappear." There's so much area under the stock dyno curve, it's almost impossible to catch it "off-power" unless you're running a GT9-bazillion or massive cams with a stratospheric redline, right? And, as much a pain in the ass it may be to first get used to the architecture, bracketry, timing chain shenanigans, sensor location, and all the other quirks of it, once you're used to playing with the SR, I find it hard to genuinely want to work on anything else.
It'll never die. The engine that had its' own mailing list, then its' own forum... the quiet cult that appreciated this engine so much has grown, thanks to its' own efforts and the (gasp) drift scene, that it's impossible to think otherwise. I mean, for an engine that was produced so much, for so long (approaching 20 years?), there's always going to be some close-knit, half-tilted, maniacally-faithful following (a la "the dash") that'll just refuse to see otherwise.
I'll have mine 'til I die. Then, it's going to my kids. Along with all the parts I'm hoarding.
