Cams and Extractors
Hi,

I am new to this forum. I am in New Zealand and own a SR16 VE N15.
I have been doing some work to it and would like some more mid-range power. I have thought of putting in some SR20 VE N15 cams and extractors. Will these fit into my engine? Would it be a big job to do and will it make any difference? Any other ideas on how I can gain more mid-range power without spending too much $$ as I am on a limited budget. I don't really want to put a turbo in it.

Thanks

Hey mate. I don't know a hell of a lot about the ve motors but I thought the sr20ve cams were smaller than the sr16ve cams so they would be a down grade. If you haven't already a full custom made exhaust should open up a little bit more power. But I'm sure a full exhaust system would be cheaper than cams and install of cams.

NoFX - the SR16VE N1 cams would be an upgrade for your engine. depending on budget extractors range from $100 to $1700. hit the search button or check the for sale threads.

I think that most gains you will gain with ECU tuning. Especially in midrange.

you said you own a sr16 n15 which would mean a regular vz-r, but then you said you want to put in sr20ve n15 cams

well no n15 comes with sr20ve

but the sr20ve cams wont help you. the sr20ve cams were obvious designed for a 2.0L economy motor. also bear in mind the sr20ve rev to 7200rpm where as the 16ve revs to 8300rpm. 20ve cams were not designed to rev that high.

if you want more power, go sr20ve and use your sr16ve cams. add an extractor and 2.5 or 3" exhaust, good clutch and pp, programmable ecu, light flywheel and you are good for 185-195whp depending on your gas and tune.

you said you are on a budget but you can do in stages

i have sr20ve n15 with 16ve non n1 cams with those mods and making 186whp on e10 gas (90 octane)

13.9 sec on the 1320 @ 100mph with just seats & spare removed. street tyres. that was also with a short shifter that was giving me hell going 1st to 2nd.

peace

Get some N1 cams and a decent header. After that you will need something to tune with to see the best gains

i disagree

n1 cams in a non n1 sr16ve motor wont give much gains if any

the n1 and non-n1 sr16ve motors have different specs - pistons, cr ratio, intake etc.

2 different motors

Yeah, i agree. For his question about midrange gains, ECU would be best idea and then safe money for 2.0L stroking.

i've been wondering how sr20ve cams would do in a sr16ve, not so much caring about how much peak power they get but i bet they would get a little more mid range.. i also wonder how they would do for gas mileage cause as it is my friends 16ve gets nearly 40mpg on the hwy

the reason i wonder this is because me an my friend have talked about swapping his 16ve over to my gf's g20 an takin her 20ve an puttin it in his se-r but he wants to keep the 16ve cams.. an i know that puttin a 16ve in a g20 is kinda dumb but i really dont care, its not a race car its the family car an i would like for it to get a little better gas mileage..

+1 for moving this to the vvl section
