No difference. Same ****. You can just use the piping nd scrap the muffler. All your reall using is the bends and then welding whatever mufler you want up to it. But the thing is you can use the megan right out of the box

Then the Megan would actually be superior to the VRS in this application when using a different (perhaps STi) muffler.

Which sounds like a very good, quiet, inexpensive way to go.

I already have the original SSAC with the 2" secondaries.

Slightly off topic.....maybe......

How restrictive would this exhaust set-up be for a simple VE (I/H/E, tuning) swap? When going VE, would someone want a 2.5" secondary on the SSAC? If so, would the rest suffice? IE....SSAC w/2.5", Megan piping kit (throw out/sell the muffler), stock cat, and the STi muffler? Would that flow reasonably well on a VE, or be overly restrictive?

My 170K OEM-original-muffler is shot. The rust holes are starting to get nasty. It will not be functional for much longer. Geez, only 17-years and 170K, I think I should bitch at Nissan.

You wont make the most power in the world. But with the cat in place itll be quiet and you can live with it. Our cats arent that restrictive stock. They are actually 3"s on the inside. You definately want the 2.5"downpie though and 2.5" at the least the rest of the way back. Why everyone is so obsessed with the STI muffler I dont know though. Maybe its 2.5" in and out.

Quiet is fairly critical to me. I do not want attention from the police nor any youngsters that may want to race.

I'd give up a few horsepower to have things nearly OEM-quiet. Both now, and with a future VE.

Cool to know. There have to be other guys with a DE, wanting a quiet NA exhaust, that will eventually go VE.

Isfahan and Vadim report it to be extremely quiet. Correct, 2.5" straight through.

Plus Classicaddict has pointed out you can get them for $50-70 pre-owned.

Sounds pretty good to me. Megan cat-back system (ditch the muffler) and pick up an STi muffler from the Scoobie forums for $50-70.

Yeah, the can is huge, and it hangs down a bit. Here's how it looks (and sounds) on my car:

I got that STI catback from some guy on craigslist who was parting out his STI.

Shawn, I plan on going VE in the not too distant future and am going to use this exhaust. Yeah, it might be a little restrictive, but after 2 years of living with a droning and loud straight-through, I am willing to give up 5hp for peace and quiet. Especially on a DD. Now, you've got lots of sound deadening, so a less restrictive muffler might not bother you like it does me in my car.

only thing id do to the muff is put a new tip on it. i LOVE the low key looks of it for my wagon and the fact it faintly has STi stamped on the side of it is awsome............but an se-r driving around with STi stamped on the side of the muff may look a bit off lol.

Honestly man, piping is piping and you are getting stainless polished pipes with the MEGAN ones. THe fitment was VERY good actually for th emidpipe. The muffler left a bit to be desired, but it wasn't that bad. I say get MEGAN pipes and then put your own muffler on. The muffler shop can weld a small exhaust pipe from the muffler to the megan piping and install for CHEAP. For a cheap nice muffler, I like the dynomax oval canister muffler with dual out.
