Fully bolted DE vs. VVL swap
So this whole week I have been going back and forth in my head about what I should do with the car over the winter to prepare for the race season next year. (time attack and drag) My goals for power would sit in the 170-180whp range, which is the upper limit of a stock internal DE, or where a VE would start off with just a few mods.

Anyone have experience with either or both of these setups that can explain to me the disadvantages of the fully bolted DE and why I should do the swap?

if your gonna spend the money, might as well upgrade.. why settle for less? the ve will have room for upgrades, the de will be at its limit.. not to mention the ve's are pretty stout, an lower milage, they have upgraded oil pumps an piston oil squirters.. you will prolly get better gas milage from a stock ve then a maxed out de.. the swap is sooo easy, its a bolt in affair.. plus bang for buck the ve wins again..

well thats all i can think of right now lol

I agree^. Especially if its a drag car, I would go with the VE. With some basic mods you will be in the 13's. Now time attack may be a different story, if its a faster kind of track the VE may perform well but if there is a need for more bottom and midrange power/torque, the DE may be a little better. At the end of the day, I would pick a VE.

For drag racing I would be happy with mid to low 14's. (I'm at 4800ft) Time attack wise, we race on a 1-mile go-kart track and there are a few super slow speed corners.

I'm leaning towards the VE anyway, but wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing.

i did the same thing about 6 months ago... i was in the middle of my DE build, and decided to just get the VE. i think it was the best choice i couldve made. it was more money out of my pocket up front. but in the end i think it was the cheaper/most effective choice.

get the VE

- VE all day if you have the time to save some coins. My situation was a little different, so I through the 10.1 DE in, but I'm going VE as soon as I piece it together the way I want it .

I currenty have my full bolton DE and my power is at 167, with just an G20 ecu. With more management I could possibly get 175. But since I know I want more I'm also goin VE. At the end of the day I wanted to atleast hit that 200 mark

^167? What header are you running? It would be nice if they would have came out with a N/A aftermarket DE intake manifold some years back, but it probably wouldn't help the stock bottom end guys out as much.
