You basically need to take the three wires from the distributor that are responsible for powering and switching the coil and put the power and ground to the external coil. Get a power transistor and put it in series and connect the switched wire to the third terminal.
Then you'll need a distributor that fits the correct cap on it (a cap with a coil input).
Wiring diagrams are your friend. Get the pinout for the internal coil distributor and the schematic for an eternal coil car (1994 FSM on this web site works fine) and you're in business.
