Timing with s4....need HELP!!
Hello my fellow N/A friends!
Greetings from Nicaragua

Talking about Timing with the S4s.... its a Real PAIN in the ass to set the timing with those cams!

For real!.... right now im having a Hard time trying to set the timing where the cars performs the best, wich i think is on 17.
I Heard with these cams you cant go pass 17 with a risk of knocking and if you add the Fact that the Gas over here SUCKS!!

The problem is that on idle at 750rpm is too LOOPY and the Pulley marks move all over the place!! I never been 100% sure i have the car on the right timing.

Only at 900rpm is when the engine start runing Smooth enough to actually read the marks. And I also have UR pulleys wich im not sure if they are mark as the OEM or have the same size (theyre suppose to )

Right now im getting a CEL code 34, thats the Knock sensor one....

These are my mods at the momment:
SR20DE JDM 10:1
walbro fuel pump
NISMO AFPR
JWT S4
CAI AEM
XTD Clutch kit Stage3 and flywheel
UR 2 peace pulley set
Motor mounts
Outlaw Themospacers
SSAC 2.5" header and 2.5" custom Exhaus
CALUM Basic daughterboard with custom program.

Can someone Help me solve my problem??? .... i would like to be able to set it to 15 or 17.

are you putting the car into timing mode? that should stabilze the marks on the pulley i thought.

Yeap im doing the hole process fallowing the FSM.
Reving up to 2000rpm for 2 min.Turning it off and disconecting TPS. Then turning it back on and Reving it 2-3 times up to 3k.

The problem is that at idle speed of 750rpm aprox. is really hard to tell cause the marks move too much. I only can stabilize them by putting the idle at 900 to 1000rpm where the engine idle is smooth.

Did i mention i have UR pulleys.... i dont know is that an issue too??

i never used that method. use this its worked for me fool proof. run the engine til its hot. with the car running unplug the tps. then rev the motor 3 times to ~3000rpm. wait few seconds for the ecu/idle to stabilize and voila you're in timing mode. set your timing and plug the tps back in.

no i don't have those. but from lots of reading the fsm procedure doesn't always work well. i found that procedure in another thread (mike kojima method, apparently a pretty well known sr20 guy).

^This is what I did and it worked great. I think I'm at 18* right now. I'm running BC2's, but they idle just like the stock cams. They come alive around 5300RPM's. They are working out great

i had the same problem, i still on stock base timing with my S4's because my idle is crazy ass hell too and the pully marks never stay in one spot

Thats my point!
I really think im doig the process as it is. Is more about the idle of the cams, thats the problem.

The S4 cams are so popular among Nissan enthusiat cant bealive no one hasnt solve this puzzle yet...

I really want to be able to set it to 15-17, and be 100% is correct.
