Wayne Here... what's it take to get my name OFF this mod?!
Hey guys.... Wayne C here.
First off, I came up with the trick probably 10 years ago and posted it on the SE-R mailing list. One of the SE-R.net admins took the liberty of putting my name on it and publishing it. I'm really not such an arrogant f**k that I care to have my name plastered on something, but it's probably too late to undo!
The SE-R.net article describes it well. And I still have the original hacked up distributor cap here: http://www.xxiii.com/~wcox/car_stuff/SR20_dcap.jpg
My distributor was probably a lot further out of whack than most, so you might not get any improvement. I described it as feeling like the boost you get after replacing well-worn spark plugs, and the effect is the same -- the ignition gap has been opened up farther than the system can reliably fire across, so correcting it should improve the ignition overall, especially at higher rpms.
I never claimed it was a huge difference -- maybe a couple HP if your distributor was misaligned as far as mine. But it's free, only requires a timing light and old cap, and doesn't affect NVH.
If anyone wants to come up with a better name, I'm all for it!
