Thread: new to the rwd sr20 world..

hey guys im about to start an sr20det build into a friends s14. i need lots of help so hopefully you can point me in the right direction. first off is the engine/tranny setup. which would be best for an s14.. im looking for the easiest headache free swap. thx.

Most RWD SR installs are pretty much headache free. I assume you've done a GA to SR swap in the XE-R, so doing a RWD SR transplant should be cake.

ya i did a ga to sr to det on my b13..
since im doing a swap into an obdII s14 i should try to find an obdII sr20det with wiring harness and ecu right?

No such thing AFAIK. I don't think the OBD protocol was ever mandated in Japan.

Either engine should work great. The S13 engine will be less expensive; if you put the balance of money into the S13 engine (rather than buying an S14 engine) - like, front-mount, big exhaust, etc - you'll have more power than the S14 engine makes anyway.

They both respond well to about the same mods. If it were me, I'd go with an S13 engine, but I'm biased.

It's the F4 plug that's going to be a pain to wiring in. Get the S14DET it has a better turbo already on it.

as long as i get the appropriate wiring harness and ecu to accompany the engine i should be ok right? if i get an s13 engine/wiring/ecu ill have to get a s13 to s14 conversion plug for the ecu? or will the s13 wiring already fit an s14 without mods?

You will need to take the F4 plug from your stock S14 harness and put it into your S13 harness. The F4 plug controls the wipers and some other things which I can't rem off the top of my head. The wiring diagram should be online tho.

As far as harness-to-ECU, you just get the ECU that matches the engine and harness. It plugs right in.

For the harness-to-chassis, listen to these other guys, I know nothing. I had Wiring Specialties do my harness work, which made it plug-and-play.

S13 SRs into S14s don't look right. I think if you're going to put an SR into an S14, it should be an S14 SR.

Useless information, I know, but just an opinion to add to your advice file.

ya im leaning towards an s14 sr.. think that would make it less of a headache..
