Convention track day tech inspection checklist.
The convention is approaching quickly, and I know a lot of us are still working on getting our cars ready for a day at AMP. Joe has asked Chrys and I to head up the tech inspection for the track day. We regularly perform tech inspection and driving instruction for Phil Wicks Driving Academy events. I am posting this thread to go over the basic items that we will be looking at to ensure that your car(s) are safe and ready for track duty.
Brakes
-Firm pedal, absolutely no fluid leaks
-No seized or dragging calipers
-Pads with at least 3/32nd of material remaining (approximately 1/4th)
-New fluid is recommended, but not required
Suspension
-No excessively loose joints, bushings or bearings
-We recommend that you have your alignment checked and set (if needed) prior to the event
Wheels/Tires
-All lug nuts and studs (or wheel bolts) MUST be present and torqued properly
-Tires must be free of sidewall cracks (dry rot) and have adequate tread left. Tires that are severely dry rotted or ones that are bald/corded WILL NOT pass tech. Please make sure your tires are in good shape before you come.
Engine/Transmission
-No major fluid leaks. Basically, anything that pulls up dripping will likely not pass.
-We will check your oil level as a courtesy. I recommend slightly overfilling (about 1/2qt) your oil on a FWD SR.
Exterior
-Working brake lights
-Bumpers/mirrors/body panels must be properly secured
-We will be using car numbers this year. They will be assigned randomly by Joe or myself and put on the cars (driver and pass front doors) using blue painter's tape. You are welcome to do them yourself if you'd like. If you have a race car with permanent numbers, please PM the number to Joe.
Interior
-NO loose items in the car or the trunk. This includes floor mats, unless they are held in by factory mounting clips. Cameras must be secured with proper mounting devices.
Helmets
-Motorcycle helmets are adequate, SA helmets are recommended but not required.
We will conduct tech inspection at the track, starting at 7am. We will also be available the day before to tech cars at the hotel.
Please be sure to have your car in order before bringing it to the event. We do not want to have to tell someone they can not run their car. That being said, safety is our ultimate goal and we will fail you if your car does not meet these basic requirements.
If you have any questions or concerns about your vehicle, please PM me and I will gladly answer them.
