Fuck it....... Let's just find a big open dirt lot right? We can set up some cones and have at it.......

Let's not bash what others like... We had a blast at the road course.... We had a blast at the drag day.....and we will have a blast next year.

Drag racing used to beconsidered part of the 'free day' anyway.

And this is why the convention has gone south in the past. Those words are dangerous. We enjoyed past conventions but since we all saw them going in a downward direction.. Now they are getting better

Yeah, the past conventions sucked because we didn't take straight-line racing seriously.

The point was that track days were special, and not everyone could participate in such an event in their own region. Drag racing's drag racing. Who can't do that on any given Friday or Saturday night in their own area?

We cant. There isn't a track within 2 hours from our location. It's a large ordeal to go to the track for us. And for the beginner racer, going with a group of guys that make them feel comfortable by answering questions and guiding them through the process makes things more acceptable to trying drag racing instead of watching in the stands.

And yeah I think the free day was to cater to the people bringing their spouses or fam( on paper it sounds nice ) but in reality half the attendees went drag racing or looked for a drag racing track during the 06,07,09 conventions I attended. It does make a difference, rain should be the only deciding factor.

If there's an extra day on the convention schedule I will bring the dyno, I might just bring it to sit on for a chair instead of leaning on my trailer or car. If the interest is there for using it and having a great time then it makes sense to have it.

So instead of being 15 minutes from the dyno I'll Set it up right outside the hotel.. Convenient enough?
Only if there is a Wednesday at the convention.

Sweet! Maybe if I'm lucky it'll go to the committee.

I had a change of heart at this years convention.

The last time I ran a car down the 1/4 mile was back in the late 80's with my 5.0 LX Mustang, and I had zero interest in doing it again, but went along for the ride. As soon as we turned off the road, and on to the dragstrip grounds, I decided to run.

What a blast.

I made 10 passes, had passengers for about half of them, made it into the 100mph club, spent time with people at the strip who I hadn't spoken to at the road course, and got to see some serious action. It was a completely different vibe than Nelson Ledges, and I am definitely glad I decided to run.

The strip isn't just for the hardcore crew. Smiles were all around, from the epic 16 second G20 battles to big bore VE's on slicks. Even if you don't want to run your car, it's nice to see how the other half lives. I'll run both again next year, and going forward.

As far as a poll goes, here's the results from our 2013 questionnaire.

SE-Riously considering Drag Strip? Yes 69, No 24
SE-Riously considering Road Course? Yes 72, No 21

So the interest is definitely there, and it's a pretty even split.

Lets just leave it at this:

'12 set the standard. During the free day, everyone still had ample opportunity to do what they felt like (my 2 hours of Crown hunting, followed by lunch and then Men In Black 3), and others went to the Rock 'n Roll hall of fame, etc. etc. etc.

Guess where everyone was Saturday night until damn near midnight? The dragstrip. EVERYONE that came to the convention went to the dragstrip. No shit. The hotel parking lot was a ghost town. Ask any hardcore circuit racer that has to get as many laps in as possible on the Friday roadcourse event and they'll tell you. They had just as much fun as the hardcore drag racers.

Like Chris said, it's not about just the 1/4mi fury, it's the community.

Strange, that word is...

What a blast.
The same is true with me. Needless to say my experience was a bit different than yours Chris. I am fully convinced now that I hate participating in drag racing (a story for another day). I really don't enjoy it at all. I know now that I am a road course guy and that is just how it is.

That being said, it was as clear as day to me that the 1/4 mile event was an absolute must for every convention in the future. There is plenty of time Saturday to do the family thing. Katie and I did the zoo thing and it was great. The drag day was a resounding success for all. Ask anyone who went to the 2012 convention if they think the drag day isn't now absolutely mandatory. Ask any of the road course guys. You won't find anyone who thinks it shouldn't be on the bill. It is, without exaggeration, the perfect compliment to the road course and the picnic.
