Oh I just wanted to add one more thing, regarding the drift day...

The format of the convention is not changing at all. For people who are not into drifting, it's still a Friday track day and Sunday car show, with Saturday being a "free day." If you don't care about drifting, don't come to the track Saturday, that's simple.

The whole reason we are including a Saturday drift day is to get more people to the convention. For every person that doesn't care about drifting, there is somebody else that wants to drift that doesn't care about the track day. They can have Friday as their "free day" if they want, or even show up a day later. The whole idea is to have enough to cater to everyone.

I actually hope to see some cars that sign up for both track & drift. Also, by having a drift day, it's helping to bring our track costs per person down to something affordable, otherwise we wouldn't be able to run at RA at all.

We will be able to ride in the drift cars? I'm not drifting a sentra but would love to ride in a drift car with a guy that knows what he is doing. I know there are certain rules that need to be followed but I always wanted to ride in a drift car with somebody that can actually drift.

I'm not sure yet. I'm meeting with the folks at Road America to discuss our contract with them in 2 weeks. It'll depend on what kind of regulations they want to enforce.

We plan on setting it up just like we have done track days in the past, where you register and put down your experience level. As long as RA allows, we may allow ride-alongs with the advanced class of drifting (which we'll probably require proof of current or past D1, Formula D, or Nopi Drift license). When we get the website up in the next few weeks, I'll try to get as much info about classes and stuff on there as soon as possible. And FYI, the convention website will be www.nissanconvention.com but it's not live yet.

Torry, I think its slightly oversimplifying things to just call it "negativity." (at least from me)

My purpose was to open some lines of discussion. I think a few of us have something invested in this future, so I think a simple discussion about it was not out-of-line.

You're post went a long way with addressing a lot of stuff that was otherwise left to the imagination.

I feel that something as large as a name change and a mission change deserves community-driven brainstorming which should start with a preface (such as your post), outlining problems and possible solutions. (buzzword: transparency)

I know its a pain in the ass to get opinions from every Tom Dick and Harry, most of whom wil be no-shows. But I think its a very diplomatic step when it you're putting on an event that may rely on the participation of this community.

All that being said...
I will try very hard to be there (hopefully in an rental Accent or something tiny for the track event). I support your efforts and will help with whatever you need. It goes without saying I will be a sponsor somehow. I am painfully aware of how much energy and money it will take to make this happen, and can't wait til next year.

(BTW, I actually like the drift day idea!)

Well I'm glad you're on board. As for discussing the direction of the convention with the community, I have. I admit that I didn't discuss it much with the forums (here and sr20forum), but I did discuss this with other convention planners. I figured those are the important people to discuss it with since they know all the work and effort that goes into it, and about attendance falling off. I've discussed the direction of the conventions with Joe, Kieran, Ray, Mike, Greg, and a few others as well, and most everyone seemed to agree in the direction they need to go. I could have asked the rest of the community, but obviously the above mentioned people would have significant weight on the decision of future conventions compared to the rest of the community because of their involvement with past conventions.

But anyway, like I said, I'm not trying to hide any alternative motives, so feel free to ask away about anything. It's true, I want to see NICO involved with not just 2010, but future conventions as well, but that's mainly because I want to see the convention live on and not die out like it almost did last year. And I know that with NICO backing, it's possible to keep it going.

I started working on the convention website last night, and I intend to have a complete history of the SE-R conventions on it. I want past photos, stories, etc, for every year so we can show the rest of the Nissan community the passion that SE-R owners have, and what a tight community it is. So when I get a little further along in developing that site, I'll be asking for people to help contribute photo albums and stories about past conventions. I'd like to build a permanent site for the future conventions.
