Thread: Exhaust idea

I was wondering if you could some opinions on a custom setup for my 1998 SE-R. Basically I have built it to be GOOD at everything but great at nothing. With this I put in the nice stereo and dynamat, etc but I also dropped in the GTiR motor.

What I want to do is keep the 3" that I have back to the axle. After that I want to go into a QTP cutout with the "quiet side" going to a camero style muffler that will hang between the spare tire well and rear bumper. I'll then run pipes going down to the tips on each side for dual exhaust.

Where it gets tricky is before each tip would be a y-pipe as this is where the "loud side" would plumb into, keeping the outside look simple. I have contacted Walker Exhaust and they are willing to help me find a muffler that will suit this.

The QTP will be wired into a repurposed clutch switch to open the valve under full throttle. This way I can cruise nice and quiet and then step on it and let it open up.

The rear bumper will have provisions for dual exhaust once I am done with it.

Good luck, I've wanted to do a simpler setup with a quiet rear and loud side pipe for years on the b14. Is QTP the way to go for cutouts?

Can you draw a pic and post it (of the idea)? It sounds like 3 exhaust tips, but I have no idea where the dual exhaust tips exit...

Seems like a lot of work and $$ IMO.. but that's just me.

I have a QTP cutout on my car. It's just the Y pipe that sits before my cat and dumps out. I'm not sure how well that would work having it automatically open at WOT, considering the butterfly valve takes about 5 seconds to fully open or close. Mine was just wired up to a switch so I could just open/close it manually when I wanted.

Also, I have replaced the motor that controls the valve twice because it's just died. Currently, I've decided not to replace the motor again and just have a block off plate with wing nuts installed on the opening.

I would upload a drawing but my circa 2008 MacBook Pro just commited suicide and this work computer hardly lets me do work. As soon as I get a new computer Ill post a picture which at this juncture maybe pointless as I wont have any money because I need a new computer...

If you decide to do a dual exhaust setup,I would recommened getting rid of the 98 rear bumper,too.
The 95-97 rear has two spots for tips molded on it.
I always thought it looked funny with a tip on one side,and still a vacant cutout on the other side like they came with from the factory....wheras the 98 was (correct) for single exhaust tip.

Straight pipe ftw! Jk lol. I like the idea of the exhaust cut out, its something ive wanted to do for a while. Just curious, why do you want dual tip exhaust? For looks?

BMW and others use this type of setup in their stock exhaust - makes for a quiet idle and helps to regulate back pressure.
