Thread: Somewhat noobish question about fans.

Are both fans supposed to come on at idle? Or after a long drive? My drive to work is typically 25 miles and when I got into the parking lot this morning, I had the strange urge to pop my hood. I come to find that only one fan is kicking on. Is this normal? I also have a strange problem with my temperature gauge. It keeps fluctuating between cold and operating temp. I figure that's an electrical problem considering it only started happening after a bad storm I got caught in.

The second fan is on when the A/C is on only.

Temp gauge fluctuation is typical. The spade connector on the sensor is loose. I always rip it off and wire in an alligator clip and call it a day.

Well then. I might have a problem. Only one fan comes on with the A/C on. I sat for a few minutes with the A/C off and didn't see either of them come on. Could it be a blown fuse?

Which one is turning on? The one by the battery, or the one by the accessory belts?

Yah, it could be a blown fuse.

The one by the accessory belts is the one that turns on. The one by the battery is standing still. I wiggled the connector a bit and got nothing. When I get home from work, I'll check the fuse and maybe unplug it and plug it back in. I'm hoping it's either the fuse or the relay and not the fan itself.

I do believe that the fan you have that still works is the A/C fan (only installed on cars with A/C and only runs when A/C is on). The one that is not working is the normal operation fan I believe.

Put power to the fan that's not working and see if it kicks on and go from there.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I'll just check everything when I get home and hope the fuse is just bad.

Will do. I'm really hoping it's just a fuse. I already have to order a new bumper this week and I'm getting a new tranny put in Friday. Really don't want to have to add fans to my list.
