Death Knock
So after putting on my new rims and taking her for a cruise I began to hear a knocking between 2500 rpms and 3000 rpms. Instantly drve to my buddies shop, popped the valve cover everything was in workng order, checked alternator bolts, header bungs, hoping for the best...... nope. Def coming from the block sounds like the 3rd bearing. Im very routine on maintance, never let oil pressure get low but shes at 180k and whoever had her b4 def beat her to shit. A lil upset but if it breaks.... upgrade. So i have some money saved but not enough for a full det or ve swap. I also dont wanna buy a de 10:1 just for lil more power since i wanna be boosted and it would be pointless. So i am thinking of buying a det running it without boost n/a for a bit till i can get all piping, intercooler, etc. Good plan? If not im open for suggestions. Plus i cant really sell her cuz i just cant. On a side note i pay out the ass for insurance cuz when i was younger i was a dick driver (totaled 3 cars) , just collision is 5200 a year on this so another car.... cant afford it. So the knock isnt loud but im not gonna put it off to long because i drive 80 miles to and from work. Like i said really just looking for suggestions not a big sr20 crowd where i am. Thanks.

If compression is good on all 4 cylinders id try swaping the rod bearings depending on how loud the knock is.. you may just need to swap the rod bearings before you really end up killing the crank shaft. if the motor is pretty much shot and you dont feel safe drive it being that it may leave you stranded.. put thicker oil in it and drive it till it blows. Also if you do end up driving it with the knock. i suggest not using first gear when driving from a dead stop. Use Second only and always. And try to keep the rmps lower then when the actual knocking starts and avoid putting the load on it/downshifting. Ive notice the motor wont knock as much when its cold so colder weather will actually help. Do this and your bad motor will last you abit more. i was able to drive back and to work 20 miles round trip with a bad knock for 4 months doing this.

You don't need a DET to go turbo.

Why not just get a regular DE block off of someone so you can rebuild it with new piston rings and bearings until your current motor pops? Then you swap in the rebuilt block with a new headgasket and drive it until you save money to go DE+T. If you can do the work yourself you'll save alot of money.

Just an idea.

Yeah i basiclly have to drive it but ive been shifting before 2k rpms. I also threw in a quart of 10 weight today. It just sucks that cruising speed at 55 it knocks.
As far as the block i thought about that so i could build it, need to find a block first thats in good shape.
And the only reason i thought about getting a whole det was lower milage and having the turbo, mani, inject, etc ready to go.
If anyone has a block in good shape id scoop it cuz it probably be the cheapest easiest way. Plus obviously with a built bottom end i could avoid future problems. A buddy of mine who built a 400hp evo does my work with my help so i can safe money on labor.

So i lucked out and was able to scrub up enough money for a w10 sr20det. Boosted in a couple weeks. I cant wait.

So everything is swapped over, avenir sr20det, bc2 cams, 6 puck clutch, light fly wheel, jwt ecu, thing is a beast under full throttle. It is sputtering around 1.5 to 2.5k rpms. Been trying to figure it out gonna hook it up to nissan data scan, i think its the tps cuz i cant hold a steady speed and its throwin a code for tps sensor. We swapped over my usdm one with a alot of modification so maybe we hacked it up a little to much. Plus i thought two plug tps is for autos though mine is 5 speed and was under the impression it always was. The other wierd thing is when put into gear the engine revs up to like 2 grand? Another little bump i gotta figure out. Other than those two issues it pulls hard, idles great, and seems to run fine.

sure it's not something loose that's rattling? On my old engine, I had a strange noise that would happen at a certain RPM and happened to be something loose(not a bearing..heh).

Originally thats what i hoped for but after the swap I tore down the old de and it was def a bearing. Im gonna just rebuilt the block for future upgrades. Now the sputter in the det is driving me crazy.
