Intermitent Tachometer
Hi all - new to the scene, however my tachometer goes in and out, noticing that "smacking" the top of the cluster can sometimes awaken it.

1) Do you all think it could be a loose connection?
2) Does replacing the cluster usually do the trick?
3) Can other cluster's mileage be modified?
4) Any other places to look?

Did some searching, but a lot of information about aftermarket tachometers, something I am not interested in.

thanks all

Ah thanks for sharing your story. Sucks you weren't able to diagnose the problem, I suspect it must be some connection

I would look for a crease or crack on the flimsy plastic stuff that passes for a circuit board on the back of the gauges. If there's even a slight crack, the contraction of the material during colder temps could make for a bad connection.

I had a similar problem. Swapped out cluster, and it worked for awhile. I ended up cutting up the cluster and installing an aftermarket tach.

Mine does it too. It gets stuck somehow. I am missing the plastic over my cluster so I just tap the needle and it goes back to normal.

I replaced the tach and it fixed it. Happened again and I swapped an aftermarket into the cluster. maybe bad wires going to dist. ?

Mine does this too...I think it's an electrical short. sometimes turning the lights on makes it work sometimes pushing the clutch gets it working , sometimes pushing the go pedal will make it come on...and then sometimes it works great...
