Thread: Removing oil pan

Are you sure the lower pan can be taken off without removal of the exhaust system? I was looking at it earlier and it looks like the exhaust pipe is in the way there.

Damn that pan was a bitch to remove. I had to use a knife very carefully. Got it off though .

A thin, stiff paint scraper has always been my tool of choice. And a hammer.

doing mine this weekend. Any tips and tricks? I have a paint scraper to remove the pan. I have a razor to remove the rtv from the upper pan and a wire wheel for my dremel for the lower steel pan. Also getting the big tube or RTV so I can use the caulk gun for better bead. Plus I need alot of RTV as I'm doing the pan and two VC gaskets this weekend.

the talk of wood block and pressure has me scratching my head though? I mean if it's properly torqued down why would I have to push up on the pan?

I've never used a wood block and jack. Just the bolt torque. I've never had any leaks. I've done this a good dozen times.

I'm looking at the Haynes manual right now and it says that on some (six) holes the sealant needs to go on the outside of the bolt holes? Ben how did you apply the sealant on the pan?

On the lower oil pan, the sealant always goes on the inside of the bolt holes. On the upper oil pan, the sealant still goes on the inside of the bolt holes always. I can't think of a part on our engine that sealant belongs on the outside of a bolt hole... That doesn't sound right.
The FMSs are available if you really want to triple check.
