Thread: Removing oil pan

Noticed my car is leaking a little oil. Looks like the pan is the culprit. Can I remove the oil pan with the engine in the car? I haven't really looked at it all the way yet. This will be my first time doing an oil pan job. Thanks guys.

Lower oi pan can be done without removing anything. Upper oil pan requires the exhaust (and possibly the cross member) to be removed. Both can be done pretty easily with the engine in the car.

There's an upper oil pan? What does it look like? I can see that it is leaking on the edges a little bit, not a whole lot but it's enough to make me feel uncomfortable. Is there a loosening and tightening sequence for the oil pan, like there is for the valve cover?

Also there is a tightening order and you should torque the bolts back to the correct torque. Check online for the Factory Service Manual as PDF. It might be stickied on the forum somewhere; you just need it for the correct order and torque. I have a hard copy in the garage I am using but I am too lazy to get it. Its online somewhere I know it is. Once you have everything off (including all the old gasket/sealant) put some permatex around the seal and torque it back on there. Also check to make sure its not the main seal leaking. Those leak more frequently than oil pans do.

It's definitely not the main seal. It's leaking at the front of the lower pan, on the edge. There's no gasket on the oil pan right? I'll be good in just using ultra grey?

they make a cork gasket for the oil pan. autozone/advanced should have it. There are mixed reviews about the gasket so do some reading first.

yes, dont use too much or else when you compress the rtv it will drip into the oil pan and it could possibly clog something. Also get a flat piece of wood and a jack to apply pressure to the pan when you let it dry over night.
