Thread: Se-R Driver's side axle R&R

Hey guys some of you may know me from the other forum which i posted there too but it looks like this forum has more of a community.

Okay i am doing an R&R on my b14 and wanted to know what size tools will i need and how can i actually check an axle shaft to see if its bad?

Does the axle click when going in reverse or turning? Check the boot on the axle to see if there are any rips.
This is the way that I remove it:
Jack up vehicle and make sure to support vehicle on stands(very important to use stands!!)
Removed tire
Remove the 2 lower strut bolts
Remove cotter pin holding axle in
Use 32 or 34mm(cant remember) socket to remove axle nut.
Separate strut from knuckle
Push axle through knuckle and push knuckle assembly out of the way.
Pull axle out of trans. Now this step can be tricky. I use a pry bar and CAREFULLY pry around the axle til it pops out. There is a little C clip on the end of the axle that holds it in place and it can be a bitch.
Now install new axle. Make sure that the axle is seated fully in the trans. Again the C clip can be a bitch in this step as well. Also make sure that you line the splines up before pushing the axle in.
Assemble in reverse order.
Make sure to torque the axle nut to proper torque specs(140-180 ft lbs(I think) ) and install an NEW cotter key on the axle nut.

I dont think I am missing anything. If you are mechanically inclined and have the proper tools its around an hour job. If you get good at it and have a rack you can drastically reduce that time.

Okay here is what happened... Tore the wheel off The lugnuts were literally hand tight from the previous owner (my rattling/clicking noise), and broke my tie rod end loose, the tire rod end internals, the actual joint, fell out lol so i replaced that and checked the cv boot...i put the wheel back on to check for movement again and although i had fixed my clicking noise i had then found another issue, seems as though my bearing is going out... I hate bearings... So this is going to get fixed next paycheck since i dont have a press i have to take it somewhere...
