Whining noise?
Just picked up a b14 today for a good price. There is a whining noise coming from the engine bay. I don't believe its timing chain/tensioner/guide related because there is no rattle. I am suspecting an accessory, power steering, a/c compressor, water pump. Its a whine at idle and under load. Anyone ever had this issue? Tomorrow I am going to pull the belts and try to confirm my suspicion.

Its probably the a/c compressor mine used to do that too.

Thats what I am thinking. If that's the case I'll get a smaller belt and bypass the compressor all together. I won't need A/C till June or so.

I got a belt to eliminate the a/c comp. Should I unplug it as well?

I'm leaning more towards power steering...does it get louder when you turn the wheel? My AC compressor would whine a ton but only when it was on and idling (turned into more of a squeal at 2-3k), if the ac isn't on the compressor wouldn't be spinning at all unless it is just a bearing making the noise or something

The a/c compressor pulley spins with the engine if the a/c isn't on. Its belt driven so the pulley must turn at all times. I'm in the process of replacing the clutch and will figure this out after wards.

In the process of changing the clutch I found what I believe the whine was. The throw out bearing is worn. After I put everything back together I will know for sure.

Turned out to be the throwout bearing. No more whine.
