1998 vs. 1995-97 Window Switch Difference
Soooo, another surprise I found out a little bit ago

Apparently there was a window switch change in 1998... I haven't verified for 1997 or not...

But there is a very noticable difference in the window switches between the old style b14's and the 98 apparently.

From looking at the switches on the 1995 - 1997 200sx, the buttons for the up/down cycle for the windows are more of a push button rocker... its hard to explain, but the rocker switch ends hit little "buttons" that make the window go up and down... whereas the 1998 has a small conductor within the switch (that you have to take the rocker off) to see. There is a small plastic piece underneath the rocker that pushes on a see saw like metal piece... and when it touches one side it goes up... vice versa. The 95-97's are more of a "clicky" type, and the 98's are more smooth.

Someone double check me on the 97's.

Well anyway... being that the switch module has the same damn connector ... i assumed they are interchangable... well after testing two different pre 98 switches... I must inform you - that they are not

The plugs will fit, but the buttons and switches willl not work the same... so if you own a 98 200sx... either change some pinouts if you want to use the earlier switchbox, or you will need to buy the correct switchbox.

Anyone need some b14 Driver side window switches

As usual, I'll post some pictures of what I'm talking about when I get a chance...

Peace,
Ameen...

btw, thanks Mark for hooking me up on that switch so fast!!!! it came today!

That's some good info right there. Eventually, I will need to replace my drivers side switches because I have to pull the switch up kinda hard to get the drivers window to go up.

That is the same EXACT thing that happened with my 98... I took them out and cleaned the switches, but be careful, there is a spring underneath the switch that popped out and I lost it.

Hence, why this thread exists

So, you think I may be able to fix it by cleaning it out if I'm careful and don't lose the spring?

I'll throw mine in w/o the spring tonight and see if it helped it any... I'm probably going to have to buy a new switch...

if the driver side isn't connected, the passenger side doesn't work either... I was talking to my friend about this... he said that they kind of did the same thing with the 240sx.

I remember reading about a mod on Altimas.net where this dude modified the drivers window switch so that the window would automatically go up with one press/pull of the button.

I found the link to the express windows up mod. Might be worth looking into.

I can confirm - I had a 98 and 97, in fact the 98 is still my sisters.

I swapped the entire 97 interior into the 98 and guess what, couldn't do the window switches and such, your right completely different connector.

To make things weirder, this is going to be based on M/Y production I bet... The 97 I had had SOME 98 things done to it (such as the evap canister behind the drivers wheel and not in the engine bay) but still had the 97 wiring for windows...

Other stuff I learned:
98 AC compressor inlet/outlets are different sizes....
ECU harness totally different not only on the engine side but also the interior side.

Old posts on the other crappy forum I use to post on will have a lot of posts I did from 4+ years ago when I was really into these cars - I did a custom 98 to 97 interior engine harness adapter so I could use a 97 ecu harness, 95 engine/sensors, and JWT ecu in my 98 SE-R

Fun stuff :-)

Chit! Guess I have to move the switch from the broken 98 surround, to the pre 98 surround, and forget about using the better switch. Mine still works, but it's getting harder to use...

What' physically different about the two, Ameen? Can you snap a photo of the connector end of both switches? I'd appreciate it.

You still got that 98/97 harness adaptor?

For you tekster, anything

hehe... it will have to be when I have some free time from work... I've been putting in 60 plus for the past few weeks I'm getting ready to pull a 70 hr one this week ... thank god for my vacation coming next week!!!

From what I remember, the 95-97s are a little bulkier, and cheap looking. The rocker on the 95-97 taps little buttons that are actually on the module, where as the 98 has all that incorporated inside the switch. I will try and get a picture this week.

For ****s and giggles. when you plug the 95-97 window switch in, rolling up the passenger window unlocks the doors, and i think pushing the unlock button locks them... rolling down the driver side window makes the relay go nuts and makes your car smell like electrical fire

So yeah, don't use the 95-97 one in your 98 lol....
